Measure the drum for taper by measuring the inside, middle, and outside of the brake shoe contact surface of the drum. Measure at three (3)
or more points around the drum to confirm that the drum is not tapered and within the service limits.
II. MACHINING THE DRUMS
A.
Machine the drums if the drums are out of round or tapered out of the service limit, has deep grooves, and if the inside diameter service limit
is not exceeded after machining.
1.
Only the minimum amount of drum material necessary to true the drums should be removed.
2.
After machining, the drums must still be within the service limits.
3.
When machining the drums, the difference in the inside diameter of the left drum compared to the right drum should vary no more than
0.2 mm (0.008 in.)
III. REPLACE DRUMS
A.
If the brake drum is damaged beyond servicing, or if the inside diameter is greater than the service limit (either before or after machining),
replace the drum(s).
