(1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between any 2 segments of the commutator.
Standard Resistance:
(2) If the result is not as specified, replace the starter armature assembly.
(b) Check the commutator for a short to ground.
(1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the commutator and the armature coil core.
Standard Resistance:
(2) If the result is not as specified, replace the starter armature assembly.
(c) Check the appearance.
(1) If the surface is dirty or burnt, restore the surface with sandpaper (No. 400) or on a lathe.
(d) Check the commutator circuit for runout.
(1) Place the commutator on V-blocks.
(2) Using a dial indicator, measure the circle runout.
Standard runout:
0.02 mm (0.000787 in.)
