Disassembly

1.

Place steering assembly in suitable vise, then mark position of tie rod and rack end for reference during assembly. Remove tie rod ends, Fig. 11.

2.

Remove clip and clamp, then remove rack boot.

3.

Unstake claw washer, mark left and right rack ends to aid reassembly, then remove rack ends and claw washer using suitable tools.

4.

Remove rack guide spring cap locknut, then the spring cap, spring, rack guide and guide seat.

5.

Remove pinion bearing adjusting screw locknut, then the adjusting screw.

6.

Pull rack from pinion side until notched portion of rack is aligned with pinion, then remove pinion together with upper bearing.

7.

Pull rack out through pinion side of assembly to avoid damaging bushing.

Inspection & Repair

1.

Check rack for wear, damage or excessive runout. If runout exceeds .012 inch, the rack should be replaced.

2.

Inspect rack bushing for damage. If damage is evident, remove bushing using tool 09612-24013 or equivalent. When installing bushing, ensure
that the three bushing claws align with holes in rack.

3.

Inspect pinion oil seal for damage. If seal requires replacement, drive out with suitable socket. Drive new seal into position using tool
09612-10093 or equivalent, ensuring that seal protrudes from pinion tip approximately .020 inch.

Assembly

1.

Coat rack with suitable grease, then install into housing from pinion side with notched portion of rack aligned with pinion housing bore.

2.

Install pinion into housing, ensuring that pinion end is securely positioned in lower bearing.

3.

Apply Loctite 242 or equivalent to pinion bearing adjusting screw threads, then install adjusting screw and torque to 18 ft. lbs.

4.

Apply Loctite 242 or equivalent to pinion bearing adjusting screw locknut threads, then install locknut and torque to 83 ft. lbs.

5.

Install rack guide and spring, coat spring cap threads with sealer mentioned above, then install spring cap. Torque cap to 18 ft. lbs., then back off
30°. Continue adjusting cap until total preload of 4.3-11.3 inch lbs. is obtained.

6.

Coat spring cap locknut with sealer mentioned above, then install cap and torque to 51 ft. lbs. Recheck total preload.

7.

Install dust cover onto pinion locknut.
