Crankshaft Bearing Clearance, Check (Determine Bearing Clearance with Plastigage)  

  Inspect   

Bearing play - bearing cover removed.  

  Important!   

Clean crankshaft journal and crankshaft bearing shell and lubricate slightly so that thread does not tear when bearing cap is removed. Do not turn crankshaft.  

  Measure   

With "Plastigage" (ductile plastic thread).  

Cut thread to width of bearing section and lay axially between crankshaft bearing journal and bearing shell (arrow). Attach bearing cap with torque - 50 Nm/ 37 lbf. ft. + 45 ° + 15 ° .   Notice:  The bolts can be reused for checking the crankshaft bearing clearance.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove bearing cover.     Measure    Compare width of the flattened plastic thread (arrow) with the measuring scale.   "Plastigage is available for two measuring ranges.   Permissible play in crankshaft bearing: 0.015 to 0.043 mm.     Torque - Angle Method    Crankshaft bearing cap with new bolt to cylinder block - 50 Nm/37 lbf. ft. + 45 ° + 15 ° .
