Insufficient lubrication by unsuitable lubricant.

Remedy:
Remove gearshift lever and clean off old lubricant,
lubricate gearshift lever with suitable silicone grease and re-install.
For removal of the gearshift lever clamp off bellows from
the center console. Release guide clamp and remove bolt. Remove gearshift lever.
Lubricate gearshift lever (1) and gearshift bar (arrows) with silicone grease
(pink) by using a brush. Insert gearshift lever into gearshift housing.
Install bolt and bar guide clamp. Clamp bellows onto center console.
Adjustment of the gearshift is not required.

carline.
Wipe off the old grease from surface of the gearshift lever
ball
in the hatched area (1) . If a rubber seal ring (2) is
fitted to the gearshift lever ball, examine it, and in case of lack of grease
or unsuitable lubricant contaminated with abresive particles exchange rubber
seal. Dark colored grease due to light
abrasives is acceptable and does not influence the
function.
