Special Service Tools - Steering > < Replace tie rod end

Replace tie rods

Note:   For ZF steering there are 3 different tie rods per model variant - see also publication "New Technical Features Astra-H". When replacing the tie rods, note the part number required to avoid mistakes.

  Remove

1.   Remove corresponding tie rod end from tie rod LUREF_1.gif
2.   Remove corresponding boot
Note:   On RHD vehicles, to remove and refit the left-hand tie rod the right-hand boot must also be detached from the steering gear. On LHD vehicles, to remove and refit the right-hand tie rod the left-hand boot must also be detached from the steering gear.

On vehicles with right- and left-hand drive a flat surface is to be found on the steering shaft side to hold against the steering rack (arrows).
3.   Remove tie rod (1)
•   Unscrew using KM-6247 (2)
Slide KM-6247 (2) onto the tie rod to the stop (arrow)
•   Counterhold with open-ended wrench (3) against flattening on steering gear
Note:   Counterholding is no longer necessary in vehicles as of model year 2006.

  Install

4.   Attach tie rod (1) to steering gear 90 Nm
•   Clean rack thread and coat with locking compound.
•   Screw in using KM-6247 (2)
Slide KM-6247 (2) onto the tie rod to the stop (arrow)
•   Counterhold with open-ended wrench (3) against flattening on steering gear
Note:   Counterholding is no longer necessary in vehicles as of model year 2006.
5.   Install boot or boots
6.   Install corresponding tie rod end LUREF_1.gif

7.   Check straight-ahead position, adjust if necessary
8.   Check toe-in, adjust if necessary
