Circuit/System Description
The stop start system helps to save fuel and to reduce the
exhaust emission. When conditions allow, it switches off the engine
as soon as the vehicle is at low speed or stand still, e.g. at a
traffic light or in a traffic jam. It starts the engine
automatically as soon as the clutch is depressed. A battery sensor
ensures that an autostop is only performed if the battery is
sufficiently charged for a restart. The stop start system will be
manually deactivated by pressing the economy button. The
deactivation is indicated by the indicator in the button going
off.

Circuit/System Verification
1. |
Ignition ON, verify the stop
start system is enabled through the stop start switch. |
⇒ |
If the stop start system is manually disabled,
enable the system. Refer to the vehicle owners manual for
instructions on enabling the system. |
2. |
Observe the scan tool
Stop/Start Select Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the
stop start switch. The parameter should change between Active and
Inactive. |
⇒ |
If the parameter does not change between the
specified values, refer to Stop Start Switch Circuit
Malfunction. |
3. |
Command the Stop/Start Mode
Switch Indicator output control ON and OFF with the scan tool. The
stop start switch indicator should turn ON and OFF when changing
between the commanded states. |
⇒ |
If the indicator does not turn ON and OFF, refer
to Stop Start Switch Indicator Circuit Malfunction. |
Circuit/System Testing
Stop Start Switch Circuit Malfunction
1. |
Ignition OFF, remove the
ignition key, open the driver door and disconnect the scan
tool. |
2. |
Disconnect the X3 harness
connector at the K9 Body Control Module and the harness connector
at the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel. |
3. |
Test for less than 5 Ω
between the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel low
reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. |
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the low
reference circuit for an open/high resistance. |
4. |
Ignition ON, test for less
than 0.3 V between the signal circuit terminal 14 X3 at the K9 Body
Control Module harness connector and ground. |
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the
signal circuit for a short to voltage. |
5. |
Ignition OFF, connect the
harness connector at the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument
Panel. |
6. |
Ignition ON, verify that a
test lamp does not illuminate between the signal circuit terminal
14 X3 at the K9 Body Control Module harness connector and
B+. |
⇒ |
If the test lamp illuminates, test signal circuit
for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the
S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel. |
7. |
Verify that the test lamp
illuminates between the signal circuit terminal 14 X3 at the K9
Body Control Module harness connector and B+ while pressing the
S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel. |
⇒ |
If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the
signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If all circuits test
normal, replace the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument
Panel. |
8. |
If all circuits test normal,
replace the K9 Body Control Module. |
Stop Start Switch Indicator Circuit Malfunction
1. |
Ignition OFF, disconnect the
harness connector at the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument
Panel. |
2. |
Test for less than 5 Ω
between the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel low
reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. |
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the low
reference circuit for an open/high resistance. |
3. |
Ignition ON, command the
Stop/Start Mode Switch Indicator output control OFF with the scan
tool. Test for greater than 11 V between the signal circuit
terminal 8 and the low reference circuit terminal 2. |
⇒ |
If less than the specified range, test the signal
circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If all
circuits test normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module. |
4. |
Command the Stop/Start Mode
Switch Indicator output control ON with the scan tool. Test for
less than 0.3 V between the signal circuit terminal 8 and the low
reference circuit terminal 2. |
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the
signal circuit for a short to voltage. If all circuits test normal,
replace the K9 Body Control Module. |
5. |
If all circuits test normal,
replace the S48D Multifunction Switch 2 - Instrument Panel.
