Windscreen (Cemented), Replace

 

The following tools are recommended for removing screen:

 

Thermo-Knife, MKM-590-A

Wire Cutter, MKM-589

 

This description shows replacement of the screen using Wire Cutter MKM-589.

Wear protective gloves when cutting out glass screen.

Wear protective glasses during the operation.

Two mechanics are required for removal and installation of screen.

The cementing kit available from P & A is to be used for cementing in the screen.

 

The kit consists of:

1     Polyurethane cement

2     Cleaning solvent

3     Glass primer

4     Glass primer applicator

5     Cleaning cloth

6     Sponge

7     Application nozzle

8     Cutting wire

 

Note:

The cement is hardened by air humidity.

Carry out cementing in well ventilated area.

       If necessary, moisten the cemented screen all around approx. 10 minutes with water.

Remove

 

Remove windscreen trim (outside).

Remove A-pillar inner trim panels.

Remove windscreen trim strip.

Trim strip is normally free of cement.

If large quantities of cement remain, trim off with a sharp knife.

Cut screen out of body frame using cutting wire (length approx. 60 cm/2 ft.) Draw wire through cement inwards from outside.

Carry out operation in area of door pillar (A-pillar).

Mount ends of wire in handle and tube handle.

 

Outside: Handle

Inside:   Tube handle

 

Note:

To avoid damaging instrument panel and moulded headlining, place point of tube handle as close as possible to cementing area.

Draw cutting wire outside flat along edge of glass.

Trim off remaining cement bead in body frame down to a thickness of approx. 1 mm/0.03 in. (knife).

 

Remaining cement serves as base for new cement.

Keep bead free of dirt.

Install

 

Place screen on holder (commercially available).

 

Clean edge of screen with cleaning benzine.

Mount rubber weatherstrip to edge of screen.

Put cord (e.g. curtain cord) into seal lip of rubber weatherstrip on inner side of screen.

When doing this, cord ends cross in middle of screen.

De-grease edge of screen (area to be cemented) thoroughly with cleansing solvent (A).

Apply glass primer approx. 15 to 20 mm/0.6 to 0.8 in. wide to area to be cemented with applicator (B).

 

Shake primer for 1 minute before application.

Allow primer to set slightly for approx. 5 minutes after application.

 

Do not get dirt on the primer area.

Fingerprints for example lead to loss of adhesion.

Place trim strip (ring band) on edge of screen.

 

Do not touch primer area with fingers.

Apply cement to screen.

       The cementing kit contains a triangular nozzle according to illus. D 1923.

       Before cementing, apply a test bead to check bead diameter.

 

Use Air-Powered Gun MKM-592 or commercially available cartridge pistol for cement cartridges.

Adhesion and sealing of the screen are dependent on the thickness of the bead.

Working temperature approx. 20° C/68° F.

 

Ensure sufficient ventilation in the working area.

Install screen and trim strip.

Mount screen on both adjusting eccentrics.

Press screen on to cement bead.

Adjust height of screen by turning eccentrics if required.

Note that upper screen seal fits cleanly.

The cement is completely set after approx. 36 hours.

The vehicle can be driven 2 hours after completion of cementing.

Do not heat cement (no hot sunlight, radiators and drying kilns).

 

Note:

Before cement is completely set, close doors, luggage compartment lid.

Close sash windows and glass sliding/sun roof when driving.
