Damper Bushings on Vehicle Underbody, Replace - Models 38 and 48 > < Rear axle of Models 38 and 48 (Combo/Astramax)

Damping Bushings of Rear Axle, Replace

(always on both sides)

 

On vehicles with car level control, bleed off air at filler valve. Raise vehicle.

Raise one rear axle arm using hydraulic jack and special mount. Unbolt shock absorber.

 

Place hydraulic jack under other rear axle arm and unbolt shock absorber.

 

Lower hydraulic jack slightly and remove rear spring with upper/lower rubber damper.

Raise rear axle arm slightly with hydraulic jack and mount shock absorber.

Repeat this operation on other side of vehicle.

On Models 35, 36, 45 and 46, unbolt bracket for load dependent brake proportioning valve from rear axle.

Place hydraulic jack centrally under rear axle.

 

Remove brake pressure hose retaining clips from vehicle underbody.

Place brake pressure hoses and brake lines in recesses on vehicle underbody.

Unbolt rear axle mounting from vehicle underbody.

Remove fastening bolts from vehicle underbody.

Lever slightly at the rear axle with a screwdriver if required.

Lower rear axle slightly and place KM-452-5 on vehicle underbody.

 

Place KM-452-5 with rear axle fastening bolts on vehicle underbody.

Turn over front part of edge of damper bushing using a chisel.

In order to avoid damaging rear axle assembly, blunt chisel slightly.

Fasten Assemblers KM-452-1 and KM-452-2 to axle assembly.

Ensure that KM-452-2 is correctly seated (arrow).

 

To facilitate removal of damping bushings, warm up rear axle in area of damping bushings to approx. 50 to 70 °C (122 to 158 °F) using an industrial hot air blower.

 

Note:

Use thermochrome pins manufactured by Faber Castell to measure the heat. Do not use naked flame for warming up.

Pull damping bushing out of rear axle by turning hex nut.

Note operating instruction included with the tool.

Thinly coat new damping bushing with liquid detergent before assembly.

 

Insert damping bushing in rear axle.

 

Ensure correct installation position.

Draw damping bushing into rear axle using KM-452-3 and KM-452-4.

Draw in damping bushing until collar rests against rear axle.

Remove KM-452-2 from vehicle underbody and place on other side of vehicle.

Remove and install damping bushing from other side of vehicle as described above.

 

Subsequently raise rear axle using hydraulic jack and fasten to vehicle underbody.

Lower hydraulic jack.

Insert rear spring with lower rubber damper in rear axle and vehicle underbody.

Raise rear axle arm using hydraulic jack and mount shock absorber.

 

On Models 35, 36, 45 and 46, tighten hex cap nut to 10 Nm/ 7.4 lbf. ft.

 

Lower hydraulic jack and mount rear spring and shock absorber on other side of vehicle as described above.

On Models 35, 36, 45 and 46, mount bracket for return spring of brake proportioning valve.

Mount spring for brake proportioning valve without play or tension - see also Opel Annual Inspection.

 

Lower vehicle.

Tighten rear axle mounting.

Use 2 mechanics to weight vehicle at front seats and tighten rear axle to vehicle underbody - 95 Nm/70 lbf. ft.
