Front Brake Disc Shield, Replace

 

Raise vehicle.

Mark position of relevant front wheel relative to wheel hub and remove.

 

GMF Brake Caliper

 

Remove

 

Loosen outer protective cap from seat on brake caliper using chisel and lever off.

Unscrew brake caliper fastening bolts from steering knuckle using hexagon spanner and suspend with wire hook in vicinity of wheel housing.

 

Check brake pads visually for perfect condition and wear.

Unscrew detent screw for brake disc from wheel hub and remove brake disc.

Remove fastening screws for brake disc shield through wheel hub openings.

Turn shield so that thin connecting web can be cut with plate shears as shown in illustration.

 

Remove shield over collar of wheel hub.

Install

 

Before installing new shield, cut off web with plate shears as shown in illustration.

 

Deburr cut edges and coat with paint.

Push shield with cutout over collar of wheel hub.

 

Fit retaining bolts and tighten.

 

Place brake disc on wheel hub and fit retaining bolt.

On vehicles with light alloy disc wheels, mount shield flush on collar of brake disc.

 

Note: Mating face between the brake disc and wheel must be free of dirt and plane and free of burrs.

Thinly coat new fastening screws - not micro-encapsulated with Locking Compound 15 10 177 (90 167 347).

Beforehand, recut thread in steering knuckle.

 

Mount brake caliper on steering knuckle and tighten Allen bolts to 95 Nm/70.07 lbf. ft.

Drive outer protective caps on using KM-404-1 and -3 until they contact brake caliper.

Always use new protective caps.

Ate Brake Caliper (Both Types)

 

Remove

 

Unscrew brake caliper fastening bolts from brake caliper.

 

Remove brake caliper and suspend with wire hook.

 

Illus. C 0530 shows Ate brake caliper with retaining pins. Operation for Ate brake caliper with guide pins is identical.

 

Check brake pads visually for perfect condition and wear. See corresponding operation in this group.

Unscrew detent screw for brake disc from wheel hub.

 

Remove brake disc from wheel hub.

Remove fastening screw for brake disc shield through opening in wheel hub.

Turn brake disc shield so that thin connecting web can be cut with plate shears as shown in illustration.

Remove shield over collar of wheel hub.

Install

 

Before installing new shield, cut off connecting web with plate shears as shown in illustration,

 

Deburr cut edges and coat with paint.

Push shield with cutout over wheel hub.

 

Install and tighten fastening screws.

 

Mount brake disc on wheel hub and insert detent screw.

On vehicles with light alloy disc wheels, mount shield flush with collar of brake disc.

 

Note: Mating face between the brake disc and wheel must be free of dirt and plane and free of burrs.

Slightly lower vehicle and mount front wheel.

Note installation position.

 

Illus. C 0530 shows Ate brake caliper with retaining pins. Operation for Ate brake caliper with guide pins is identical.

 

Adjust clearance by repeatedly fully depressing brake pedal.
