Brake Disc, Remove and Install or Replace

 

Brake Disc (Disc Hub) of Rear Wheel Brake

 

Note: In order to guarantee uniform braking on both sides, both brake discs must have an identical surface as regards smoothness and scoring depth. For this reason, always replace both brake discs on an axle.

 

This operation is identical to the operation "Rear Wheel Hub (Disc Hub), Replace One".

Brake Disc of Front Wheel Brake

 

Note: In order to guarantee uniform braking on both sides, both brake discs must have an identical surface as regards smoothness and scoring depth. For this reason, always replace both brake discs on an axle.

 

Raise vehicle.

Remove front wheels.

Mark position of wheels relative to wheel hub.

 

On vehicles with Check Control, remove sensor with cable from brake pad.

Note: Sensor and cable must always be replaced when replacing brake pads.

 

Illus. C 0535 shows GMF brake caliper.

Operations are identical with other types.

Ate Brake Calipers with Guide Pins

 

Lever out retaining clip with screwdriver and remove.

Remove dust covers from guide pins.

Loosen and remove bolts.

Remove brake caliper and hang up on a wire hook.

 

Remove brake pads from brake caliper and frame.

Check brake pads visually for perfect condition and wear.

Unscrew and remove retaining frame from steering knuckle.

 

Unscrew retaining bolt for brake disc from wheel hub and remove brake disc.

 

In vehicles with light alloy disc wheels - remove cover from brake disc.

Install brake disc and fasten to wheel hub with retaining bolt.

 

Note: Mating face between the brake disc and wheel must be free of dirt and plane and free of burrs.

 

In vehicles with light alloy disc wheels - attach cover.

 

Bolt on retaining frame and tighten to 95 Nm (70.1 lbf. ft)

 

Coat new retaining bolts - not micro-encapsulated - thinly with Locking Compound 15 10 177 (90 167 347).

Recut thread in steering knuckle beforehand.

Install brake pads.

Position brake caliper on retaining frame and screw in guide pins.

Tighten guide bolts: 30 Nm (22.1 lbf. ft.).

Fit dust covers.

Insert retaining clip.

 

Replace brake disc on the other side in the same way.

In vehicles with "Check-Control" insert sensor into inner brake pad.

Illus. C 0528 shows Ate brake caliper.

Operation is identical for other types.

 

Mount front wheels and tighten wheel bolts - observe prescribed torque of 90 Nm/66.38 lbf. ft.

Note markings previously made.

Lower vehicle.

Adjust clearance by repeatedly fully depressing brake pedal.

Correct level of brake fluid in reservoir to MAX.

Instruct vehicle owner not to brake heavily for approximately 200 km/120 miles if this can be avoided.

GMF and Ate Brake Caliper

 

Note: Both calipers have retaining pins.

 

Remove brake pads.

Remove retaining pins from brake caliper from inside outwards.

Note: Remove retaining clamps, if present.

 

Use commercially available tools to remove retaining pins.

 

Check brake pads visually for perfect condition and wear.

On vehicles with light alloy disc wheels, remove shield from brake disc.

 

Unscrew detent screw for brake disc from wheel hub, tilt brake disc slightly and remove disc.

If required, pull brake caliper out slightly.

Install brake disc and fasten to wheel hub with detent screw.

 

Note: Mating face between the brake disc and wheel must be free of dirt and plane and free of burrs.

 

Install shield in vehicles with light alloy disc wheels.

 

Install brake pads.

Ensure correct seating of retaining pins and expanding spring.

Note: Mount retainers, if available.

 

Replace brake disc on the other side in the same way.

On vehicles with Check Control, insert sensor in inner pad.

 

Mount front wheels and tighten wheel bolts - observe prescribed torque of 90 Nm/66.38 lbf. ft.

Note markings previously made.

 

Lower vehicle.
