BRAKE SHOES, BRAKE LININGS

 

Linings of Rear Wheel Brake, Replace

 

Raise vehicle.

Remove rear wheels.

Mark position of wheels relative to wheel hubs.

 

Unscrew detent screw for brake drum.

 

Remove brake drum.

If brake drum is run in, loosen parking brake cable.

Press parking brake shoe lever inwards using screwdriver until cam rests on brake shoe.

Vehicles with Catalytic Converter:

 

Unscrew retaining bolts for heat shield and push heat shield to one side.

 

Detach brake shoe return spring from brake shoe using special brake spring pliers.

Note adjustment unit and adjustment lever with return spring.

Lever bracket for return spring out of opening in brake shoe using screwdriver and remove.

 

Remove adjustment lever and return spring.

Press brake shoe slightly outwards.

 

Remove adjustment unit.

Turn brake shoe spring washer using KM-346 so that spring and retaining pin can be removed.

Remove brake shoes, detach return spring.

Detach parking brake shoe lever from parking brake cable and remove brake shoes.

The following operations are required when replacing the brake linings.

 

Drill off brake lining rivets using suitable drill and remove using suitable punch.

 

Brake linings are supplied in two thicknesses:

1.  5 mm/0.20 in. thick for workshops without a brake lining grinding machine.

These linings can be riveted and installed immediately.

2.  5.6 mm/0.22 in. thick for workshops with a brake lining grinding machine.

These linings must be ground to the size of the machined brake drum after riveting.

 

Always replace all brake linings on an axle, even if only one lining is oily, torn or worn.

Only use linings from the same manufacturer.

Rivet brake linings to brake shoes.

Commence riveting in centre of lining.

Beforehand, thoroughly clean contact surfaces of brake shoes. Do not apply cement or similar substances between  brake shoe and brake lining.

Install brake shoes.

Before installing brake shoes, thinly coat area of brake anchor plate where brake shoes contact with Paste 19 42 586 - 90 166 282.

Insert parking brake shoe lever in parking brake cable and mount this brake shoe with retaining pin, spring and washer.

Attach lower return spring and second brake shoe.

Ensure parking brake cable is correctly laid.

Turn adjustment pinion on threaded rod as far as stop.

If necessary, thinly coat with Silicon Grease 19 70 206 (90 167 353).

 

Note: Always replace thermoclip when replacing brake linings. Mount adjustment unit between brake shoes, ensuring correct installation position (arrow).

When using new brake shoes, ensure that spring for adjustment lever is installed.

Mount adjustment lever and spring on retaining pin.

Attach return spring for adjustment lever to brake shoes.

Attach bracket for return spring to retaining pin and press into brake shoe.

Attach brake shoe return spring to bracket using special brake spring pliers.

 

Mount brake drum and screw in detent screw.

Beforehand, tighten adjustment lever.

 

Mount rear wheel and tighten wheel bolts - observe prescribed torque of 90 Nm/66.38 lbf. ft.

Lower vehicle.

The pinion must not lock firmly at end of adjustment unit.

Adjust rear wheel brake.

Operate brake pedal several times - at least 15 times until no jumping of the adjustment lever (B) on the adjustment pinion (A) can be heard.

 

When jumping can no longer be heard, clearance between brake shoe and brake drum is adjusted.
