Subject:               Survey of Ignition Systems - Basic Ignition Adjustment

Vehicles:             All Models

This Technical Information Bulletin gives a survey of all ignition systems installed as of Model Year 1989 and their adjustment. The operating instructions and notes are generally valid and cover all previous adjustment instructions.

In the past, varying adjustment procedures have repeatedly been the cause of wrong adjustments.

For this reason the following operating instructions and notes must be carefully observed so that a m correct basic ignition adjustment is guaranteed.

Important Workshop Notes

Important

Electronic ignition systems have a higher ignition capacity than those used up to now.

Because of this, it is dangerous to touch voltage-bearing parts - low tension as well as high tension.

When working on the ignition system it must always be switched off or the battery disconnected.

Such operations are, for example: changing parts such as spark plugs, ignition coil, distributor, ignition leads or trigger box. The same safety precautions apply when connecting checking equipment such as ignition timing light, dwell angle engine speed tester, ignition oscillograph, etc.

They must not be connected unless the ignition system is switched off.

* Engine speed (A) represents only a range of validity where the basic adjustment is carried out.

Furthermore, idle speed and idle speed CO must be checked and if necessary adjusted after the

basic ignition adjustment has been carried out.

Basic Ignition Adjustment for CI and TI-i

* Engine must be at operating temperature (oil ³ 80 °C/176 °F).

* Engine off.

* Remove vacuum line from vacuum advance/retard unit.

* Start engine.

* Engine speed between 700 min-1 and 1000 min-1

* Firing angle must have value B according to table (Opel Tester) or the marking on the pulley, and the pin on the oil pump housing or cogged belt cover must align (timing light). -see illustration A 7895-

* If necessary, correct the basic adjustment by turning the distributor.

* Reconnect vacuum line.

Important:

The pulley on 1.4 Ltr. engines has two markings.

1.4 Ltr. engines are adjusted by turning in the direction of the 2nd marking (5°). -see illustration C 9810-

Basic Ignition Adjustment MSTS-i (Multec)

* Engine must be at operating temperature (oil ³ 80 °C/176 °F).

* Engine speed between 700 min-1 and 1000 min-1.

* Remove protective cap. (As of MY 87)

* On vehicles up to Model Year 86 pin A and B in the diagnostic plug are to be bridged with KM-602-2. -see illustration C 2373-

* On vehicles as of Model Year 87 the basic ignition  adjustment is possible with KM-640 in position "B" as well as with TECH 1 and

Program Module OPEL 86-87 ECU Mode F1

Program Module OPEL 87-88 ECUMode F5 Program Module OPEL 88-89 ECU Mode.

Basic Ignition Adjustment for MSTS-i and (MZV)

* Engine must be at operating temperature (oil ³ 80 °C/176 °F).

* Disconnect coding plug.

Illustration D 1250 shows installation position in the Kadett-E/Astra/ Belmont. In this case, the plug is located in the bulkhead area.

Note:

The coding plug may be removed only when the engine speed exceeds 600 min-1.

* Engine speed between 700 min-1 and 1000 min-1.

Basic Ignition Adjustment for EAI-h (EI 10) and MSTS-h (EI 11)

* Engine must be at operating temperature (oil ³ 80 °C/176 °F).

* Engine off.

* Remove vacuum hose from vacuum advance/retard unit (if present).

* Disconnect plug from throttle valve switch and bridge all three contacts in the plug. -see illustration B 8656-

* Start engine.

* Engine speed between 700 min-1 and 1000 min-1.

Object Number: 2374913  Size: DEFAULT

* Firing angle must have value B according to the table (Opel Tester) or the marking on the pulley, and the pin on the oil pump housing or cogged belt cover must align (timing light). -see illustration C 3639-

* If necessary correct the basic adjustment by turning the distributor.

* Open bridge in plug and connect plug to throttle valve switch.

Important:

On vehicles with electronic 4-speed AT, trouble codes are to be deleted after the basic ignition adjustment.
