Subject:              Basic Adjustment of Toothed Belt Tension Roller.

Vehicles:            Corsa/Nova, Kadett-E/Astra/Belmont, Vectra/Cavalier with the following engines:

C 12 NZ                        E 16 NZ

14 NV                           E 16 SE

C 14 NZ                        C 16 NZ

16 SV                            C 16 SEI

As of June 1990, an automatic toothed belt tensioner is used in the above OHC engines.

This device does not require maintenance. Repair operations which affect the toothed belt drive area make necessary a basic adjustment of the toothed belt tension roller.

Preconditions:

-    Adjustment only on cold engine

-    1st cylinder at TDC

-    Crankshaft pulley and toothed belt cover removed.

Mark on camshaft timing gear aligns with that on the rear toothed belt cover (arrow in illustration D 5444); centre;punch mark on toothed belt drive gear (1) must align with the centre of the groove (2) of the oil pump housing or toothed belt cover in the position represented (see illustration D 5444).

Loosen fastening bolts for water pump, do not screw out.

Install toothed belt, tension side taut.

Tension toothed belt in direction shown by turning water pump with KM-421-A (see illustration D 5445) Movable part (1) of tension roller (2) must now be at right stop (see illustration D 5445).

Turn crankshaft 720° (two turns) in engine rotational direction, until camshaft timing gear and toothed belt drive gear are at mark - 1st cylinder at TDC - again. For this, use fastening bolts of crankshaft pulley.

Important:

Turn crankshaft regularly and without jerking to prevent toothed belt jumping.

Position of water pump must not be altered when the engine is turned.

Object Number: 2383013 Size: DEFAULT

Loosen toothed belt in direction shown by turning water pump with KM-421-A, until pointer (1) and notch on tension roller base plate (2) match (see illustration D 5446).

Tighten water pump fastening bolts. Torque 8 Nm/6 lbf. ft. (bolt M6).

The toothed belt tension is correct when the pointer of the movable part of the tension roller matches the notch on the tension roller base plate.

Important:

If the pointer position shown in illustration D 5446 is not attained, the adjusting operation must be repeated.

Installation Instructions for Toothed Belt:

To release tension of the toothed belt, position bore holes (3) over one another and hold tensioner in position with drift.
