Adjustment Instructions for Tapered Roller Bearings in Differential:(main case with transmission and differential removed).

a)           New bearings

When replacing tapered roller bearings, these are to be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring so that slip torque of 170 to 190 Ncm (1.25 to 1.4 lbf. ft.) is measured at a speed of 1 revolution per second.

To measure slip torque, use Tool KM-455 on differential housing for F 10 and F 13, KM-J-28544 in conjunction with Torsiometer

              KM-536 for F 16.

       b)    As originally installed parts (bearing already run in)

When replacing bearing ring, differential housing or main case, and when using KM-J-28544 (for F 16) or KM-455 (for F 10 and F 13) in conjunction with Torsiometer KM-536, a slip torque of 60 to 100 Ncm (0.44 to 0.74 lbf. ft.) is to be maintained.

       c)    Restoring adjustment using marking (without axial play)

When reusing parts previously removed, such as tapered roller bearings, bearing ring, differential housing and main case, the tapered roller bearings are preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring to the same position as before removal (determined by using the marks previously made).

              (With axial play)

If axial play in the tapered roller bearings was determined during removal of the differential, maintain slip torque of 60 to 100 Ncm/ (0.44 to 0.74 lbf. ft.).

(Main case with transmission and differential installed)

       d)    New bearings

When replacing tapered roller bearings, these should be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring until a slip torque of 170 to 190 Ncm (1.25 to 1.4 lbf. ft.) is measured at a speed of 1 revolution per second.

To do this, the end shield with transmission gear should be removed from the main case beforehand.

       e)    As originally installed parts (bearings already run in) When replacing bearing ring, differntial housing or main case, the overall slip torque (with transmission gear set) is to be measured first (bearing race positioned to mark), then adjusted to the measured torque plus an additional 80 Ncm (0.6 ft lbs.).

       f)     Restoring adjustment using marking (without axial play) When reusing parts previously removed, such as tapered roller bearings, bearing ring, differential housing and main case, the tapered roller bearings should be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring to the same position as before removal (determined by using the marks previously made).

              (With axial play)

If axial play was determined in the tapered roller bearings during removal of the differential, the overall slip torque should be measured first (with transmission gear set), and then adjusted to the measured torque plus an additional 80 Ncm (0.6 lbf. ft.).

Secure bearing ring by screwing on locking plate.

Insert corresponding plugs into bearing ring on main case.

Bolt differential cover to main case.

Stick seal to cover with antifriction bearing grease.

       Use new hex bolts.

       Prescribed torque:

Sheet metal cover:   30 Nm/22.1 lbf. ft.

Light alloy cover:    18 Nm/13.3 lbf. ft.
