Steering Gear, Seal (steering gear installed)

 

Unscrew connections for both pipes and for pressure and return lines from steering gear.

 

In order to remove bolt (A - Illus. B6703), bracket

for brake servo must be unscrewed from the dash panel and swung to one side. Brake system remains closed.

Use a commercially available universal joint socket wrench insert to remove bolt (e.g. Uniflex Insert No. 47, Messrs. Stahlwille).

 

The sealing operations should be carried out with the utmost care. Pay particular attention to cleanliness!

 

Tightly bolt pressure and return lines to steering gear.

- 37 Nm/27 lbf. ft. (ZF)

- 28 Nm/21 lbf. ft. (Saginaw)

Install new seal rings on both sides of the connections. Ensure that seals are correct shape and size. The two pipes must not rest against the bellows (pipes may not be bent).

 

Check fluid level in reservoir. Top up with special hydraulic  luid if required.

 

Use special hydraulic fluid, designation DEXRON with subsequent No. D..... Catalogue No. 90 350 341 - 19 40 699.

 

The bleed hydraulic system with engine running at idle speed.

 

Turn steering wheel several time from one full lock to the other.

 

Recheck fluid level in fluid reservoir.

 

Check hydraulic system for leaks.
