Steering Column, Replace
Remove
Remove steering spindle (see
operation "Upper Steering Spindle, Replace" in this group).
Pull off wiring harness for
steering and ignition lock from contact part.
Unscrew hex bolt for fastening
steering column to dash panel.
Unscrew shear plates under
instrument panel.
To do this, centre punch left hand shear bolt.
Drill hole in shear bolt using 1/8" bit of
commercially available bolt extractor No. 1411.
Drive screwdriver into hole drilled and unscrew shear
bolt.
Clamp steering column in vice.
Remove
steering and ignition lock housing.
To do this, drill off screw head using 8.5 mm/0.33
in. drill.
Replace
steering column.

Install
Fasten steering and ignition
lock housing with retaining screw.
Coat new screw (not microencapsulated) with
Locking Compound, Catalogue No. 15 10 177 (90 167 347).
Loosely premount steering column shear plates on instrument panel and
steering column bracket on dash panel.
Insert wiring harness for
steering and ignition lock in contact part.
Install steering column,
signal switch and wiper switch, signal switch panelling, lock cylinder and
steering wheel in steering column (see operation "Upper Steering Spindle,
Replace").
Attach steering column
assembly free of tension.
Fasten steering column with support to dash panel -
observe prescribed torque. Place washer between support and hex bolt.
Tighten shear plates. Left side = shear bolt (hex head
shears off), right side = new self-locking nut (washer) - observe prescribed
torque. Pull steering spindle upwards until stop on steering spindle ball
bearing is reached. In this position, tighten clamp bolt for steering spindle
flange - observe prescribed torque.
Press out plastic washer previously placed in steering
column (seated loosely on steering spindle).
Check straight ahead position
of steering (see operation "Steering, Position Straight Ahead" in
this group).
