Upper Steering Spindle, Replace > < Steering Wheel and/or Slip Ring, Replace

Upper Steering Spindle Ball Bearing, Replace

 

(For additional details, see "Steering Column Assembly, Disassemble and Reassemble").

 

Remove

 

Position steering straight ahead.

 

Pull steering wheel off of steering spindle using KM-210-A.

Do not knock steering wheel off or on!

 

Unscrew upper and lower signal switch panelling (8 screws) and remove both halves of panelling.

 

Remove lock cylinder.

 

Remove upper half of signal switch panelling.

 

Unclip signal switch (left) and wiper switch (right) from switch housing.

 

Remove switch housing.

Lever out housing safety plugs (two).

Turn switch housing to left (turning lock) and pull off of steering column.

 

Press double ball bearing out of switch housing using KM-108.

To do this, press apart the two bearing retaining tongues lying opposite one another.

 

 

Install

 

Press in new ball bearing using KM-108.

Bearing must catch in retaining tongues.

 

Note installation position of bearing and both contact springs!

 

Depress both contact springs when pressing in bearing.

 

Install switch housing (turning lock) and secure.

Use new safety plugs.

 

Clip signal switch (left) and wiper switch (right) into housing.

 

Fasten two-part signal switch panelling.

 

Place rubber cover on steering and ignition lock housing.

 

Install lock cylinder.

 

Fasten steering wheel and secure - observe prescribed torque.

Use new lock plate.

 

Check straight ahead position of steering (see operation "Steering, Position Straight Ahead" in this group).
