Rear Axle, Damping Bushings Rear Axle, Remove and Install All Models except Model 71 (Combo)
Remove, Disconnect Unscrew cover of brake fluid reservoir and close with dummy screw cap (commercially available). Unscrew brake lines from brake pressure hoses at rear axle bracket. Remove retaining plates (see illus.). Close brake lines. |
On vehicles with load-dependent brake proportioning valve: detach spring. On vehicles with ABS: disconnect wiring plug for ABS sensor and remove cables from brackets. Detach heat shield from underbody. |
Remove, Disconnect Slightly raise rear axle with hydraulic jack. Detach parking brake cable from guides (arrow, see illus.). Release long parking brake cable at extension and detach. Remove extension. Remove rear springs as specified in operation "Both Rear Springs, Remove and Install". Remove damping and intermediate rings. |
Place hydraulic jack in the middle under axle body and raise slightly. Unbolt and remove rear axle fastening on vehicle underbody (see illus.). Using hydraulic jack, slowly lower rear axle and remove (2 mechanics). |
Remove, Disconnect Unscrew cover of brake fluid reservoir and close with dummy screw cap (commercially available). Remove both brake drums. If necessary, loosen parking brake cable at brake compensation yoke. Press parking brake shoe lever inwards, until cam lies on parking brake shoe lever. Press parking brake shoe lever forwards - in driving direction - (see illus.) and detach parking brake cable. Compress spring of parking brake cable, remove plastic sleeve from brake carrier plate and from parking brake cable. |
Unscrew brake lines from brake pressure hoses at rear axle bracket (see illus.) and remove retaining plates. Remove brake pressure hoses from bracket. Place hydraulic jack centred under rear axle. Unscrew fastening bolts for both shock absorbers. |
Remove, Disconnect Unscrew fastening nut for plate of auxiliary spring. Remove plate. |
Unscrew fastening nuts for U-bracket. Remove U-bracket and tensioning plate from rear axle or rear spring (see illus.). Caution - rear axle turns on the hydraulic jack! As of MY '96 there is a spacer plate between the rear spring and axle body. Lower rear axle with hydraulic jack and remove from hydraulic jack (2 mechanics). |
Install - all Models except Model 71 (Combo)
Install, Connect Place rear axle centrally (see illus.) on hydraulic jack (2 mechanics) and fasten on vehicle underbody. Screw nuts only a few turns onto hex bolts. Install rear springs as specified in operation "Both Rear Springs, Remove and Install". |
Install brake lines and brake pressure hoses. Install brake hoses without twisting. Install locking plates.
Tighten (Torque) Brake line to brake pressure hose - 16 Nm / 12 lbf. ft. |
Install, Connect On vehicles with ABS: route cable for ABS sensor, connect and fasten. On vehicles with load-dependant brake proportioning valve: attach spring. Route long part of parking brake cable to vehicle underbody and guide sleeve, attach to extension piece and secure. Fasten heat shield. Slightly raise rear axle with hydraulic jack. Attach parking brake cable to guides (arrow). Bleed brake system and check for leaks - see operation "Brake System, Bleed and Check for Leaks" in group "H". Adjust parking brake - see operation "Parking Brake, Adjust" in group "H". Connect rear wheels - tightening torque 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft. Place vehicle over a pit or inspection stand and load both front seats with approx. 70 kg/154 lbs. Tighten rear axle. Turn rear axle a further 50 Nm / 37 lbf. ft. + 45 ° + 15 ° on underbody. Check adjustment on vehicles with load-dependent brake proportioning valve - see operation "Brake Proportioning Valve, Check and Adjust" in group "H". |
Install, Connect Place assembled rear axle on hydraulic jack (2 mechanics). Raise rear axle, and turn to installation position until detent at rear spring - as of MY '96, detent on additional spacer plate (1, see illus. I) - aligns with bore hole of rear axle body. Fasten rear axle with U-bracket and tensioning plates to rear springs - 45 Nm / 33 lbf. ft. - ensure uniform spacing. The max. difference of the thread projections is 3 mm/0.12 in. Install plate for auxiliary spring and tighten fastening nut - 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. The detent pin at the underside of the plate (2, see illus. II) must always point towards the vehicle centre. Insert shock absorbers in bracket and tighten fastening bolt - 70 Nm / 52 lbf. ft. Mount brake pressure hoses to brake lines - note different threads M 10, M 12, (3, see illus. III). Install and secure brake hoses without twisting. |
Install, Connect Install brake drums with locking bolts (see illus.). Slightly lower vehicle and install rear wheels.
