Differential, Overhaul

Object Number: 616193 Size: DEFAULT  Disassemble

Unscrew both tapered roller bearing inner races (1) with KM-161-B (2), KM-161-3 (3) and Thrust Piece KM-161-4 (4), if necessary remover hook from counter support and fit individually to bearing. If still fitted, destroy speedometer gear, driving, (5) and remove.

Object Number: 2380328 Size: DEFAULT

Driving gear driven (1) by differential gear: Mark position of driving gear in relation to the differential gear (2). Release retaining plate (3) with screwdriver - remove 8 bolts. Remove driving gear (1), if necessary use plastic hammer. Drive out both axle shaft seal rings out of transmission or converter housing with screwdriver from within (if not remove yet).

Object Number: 616191 Size: DEFAULT  Remove, Disconnect

Push outer race of tapered roller bearing out of transmission housing with KM-697 (2) and KM-711-3 (1) - thereby ensure that the transmission housing lies plane under push. Remove optional spacer washer (3) - located behind outer race of tapered roller bearing (4). Push outer race of tapered roller bearing out of converter housing with KM-697 (5) - thereby ensure that the converter housing lies plane under push. Remove thrust washer (6) - located behind outer race of tapered roller bearing (7).

Object Number: 616201 Size: DEFAULT  Important!

Do not confuse spacer (transmission housing side) and thrust washer (converter housing side). If using new bearings, always use the thinnest spacer (see "Service" department microfilm).

Object Number: 616194 Size: DEFAULT  Assemble

Push spacer (optional) and tapered roller bearing outer race into transmission housing with KM-372-2 (1) - use KM-554 (3) with KM-710 (2) as counterhold. Push in thrust washer and tapered roller bearing outer race with KM-523-4 (6), KM-514 (5) and KM- 711-3 (4) - ensure that the converter housing lies plane under the push. Drive gear, driven (8) to differential housing: heat in fluid on heating plate to 100 ° C/212 ° F (thermocolour pencils). Attach drive gear to differential housing - note mark (9) made on removal.

Object Number: 616199 Size: DEFAULT  Tighten (Torque)

Drive gear (driven) - 100 Nm / 74 lbf. ft., use new bolts and lock plates (7) and secure bolts.

Object Number: 616192 Size: DEFAULT  Install, Connect

Push on tapered roller bearing inner races - with KM-514 (2) and KM-567-2 (1).

Object Number: 616201 Size: DEFAULT  Important!

Tapered roller bearing inner races have dissimilar dimensions. The smaller bearing must be mounted on the differential housing side, the larger bearing must be mounted on the drive gear side. To adjust the tapered roller bearing, insert differential in transmission housing, install converter housing and insert 15 bolts - tightening torque 25 Nm / 18.5 lbf. ft.

Object Number: 616197 Size: DEFAULT  Measure

Starting torque of differential gear. Without gear set, with KM-J-28544-A (1) and MKM-536 (2). Measurement value: new bearing 0.8 up to 1.4 Nm (0.6 lbf. ft. up to 1.0 lbf. ft.) / worn bearing 0.4 up to 0.7 Nm (0.3 lbf. ft. up to 0.5 lbf. ft.) - correct by selecting suitable spacer washer under outer race of tapered roller bearing within transmission housing (see microfiche "Service"). Dismantle converter housing and differential again, remove outer race of tapered roller bearing again if necessary (only required for adjustment).
