Steering Gear, Overhaul

Note:   The procedure refers to Field Repair 1859 in the event of complaints about noise from the steering gear.

  Remove

1.   Remove steering gear
  • Petrol engine
  • Diesel engine
2.   Attach steering gear (1) to previously prepared assembly holder
Note:   Clamp assembly holder in vice
•   Screw in 2x screw connections (2)
•   Release 2x bellows
Detach 4x clamps
•   Dismantle 2x tie rods (arrows) as shown

3.   Move steering gear into centre position
Note:   Using a calliper gauge, measure the projection of the steering rack with respect to the housing at both ends. The projection must be the same on both sides. The projection of the rack can be adjusted by turning the steering shaft.

4.   Make mark (I)
•   On housing, aligned with lock nut (1) and adjusting screw (2)
5.   Make mark (II)
•   On housing, aligned with steering shaft (3)

6.   Slacken lock nut (1) with KM-280
7.   Unscrew adjusting screw (3) with lock nut (1)
Note:   The position of the lock nut with respect to the adjusting screw must not change. This is essential in order to ensure the correct installation position.

8.   Detach seal ring (2)
•   Press seal ring into housing with suitable object (3)
•   Prise out seal ring from housing with screwdriver (1) and remove

9.   Remove retaining ring (2)
•   Remove grease
•   Remove retaining ring (2)
10.   Pull steering shaft (1) from housing (arrow)
11.   Pull rack (3) out of housing and check the surface
Note:   If the surface is damaged, e.g. if there is scoring, replace the steering gear.
12.   Remove old bearing bush
Note:   The bearing bush is located on the passenger side.
•   Release bearing bush (3) with suitable tool and remove
13.   Clean bearing seat

  Install

14.   Insert new bearing bush
•   Insert bearing bush as far as it will go
•   Install retaining ring (1)
15.   Coat bearing bush with a light film of grease (supplied)

16.   Install rack
•   Coat the rack evenly with the grease (supplied)
•   Insert rack centrally into the housing
17.   Install steering shaft
Note:   Rack must be installed in the centre position. The marks on the steering shaft and housing must be aligned
•   Measure the projection of the rack with respect to the housing at both ends
Note:   The projection must be the same on both sides. If the projection is not the same on both sides, repeat the procedure until you get the correct result.
18.   Attach retaining ring to steering shaft
19.   Insert seal ring with grease (supplied)
20.   Screw in adjusting screw with lock nut
Note:   Ensure that the position of the lock nut with respect to the adjusting screw does not change.
21.   Adjust adjusting screw to the mark and tighten the lock nut 80 Nm . The marks on the housing and on the adjusting screw must be aligned.
Note:   If necessary, counterhold at adjusting screw. It is essential that the marks remain aligned.
22.   Attach 2x tie rods
•   Apply screw locking compound to the thread of the rack
•   Tighten 2x tie rods 70 Nm
Note:   Counterhold with open-ended wrench against flattened area of rack.
23.   Install 2x bellows
•   Attach 4x clamps
24.   Remove steering gear from assembly holder
•   Unscrew 2x screw connections
25.   Install steering gear
  • Petrol engine
  • Diesel engine
