Starter, Check (Starter Disassembled)

Inspect all single parts.

In case of signs of wear or damage, repair or replace parts.

Cleaning petrol can be used as a cleaning agent.

Bring electrical windings into contact with cleaning agent only briefly.

Check rotor winding for short-circuited turns using suitable checking equipment.

A rotor with short-circuited turns must be replaced.

Check rotor winding for short circuit to ground.

Hold one probe against armature core, the other probe against a collector lamination.

Test lamp should not light up.

A rotor with a short circuit to ground must be replaced.

Check rotor winding for interruption.

Connect ammeter in one circuit and briefly check collector from lamination to lamination. Test voltage 2 volts.

The deflection between the individual laminations should be equal. Large deviations indicate an interruption.

A rotor with an interruption must be replaced.

Visually check field winding.

Burnt or charred windings must be completely replaced.

Check field winding for short circuit to ground.

Hold one probe on winding ends, the other probe on the stator.

Test lamp should not light up.

A field winding with a short circuit to ground must be replaced.

Check both positive brush holders for short circuit to ground.

Hold one probe against a negative brush holder (A), the other probe against the positive brush holders (B) one after the other.

Test lamp should not light up.

If a brush holder is short-circuited to ground, replace brush holder plate.

Check rotor for wear with a gauge.

New rotor:                0.03 mm or less

Used rotor max.:      0.04 mm
