Steering Gear, Remove and Install
On vehicles with OHV engines:
Remove
Remove air cleaner from engine.
Use KM - 507 - C to press both tie rod
joints out of steering knuckle.
|
|
Unscrew Loth clamp bolts for steering spindle and for
steering pinion on flexible coupling.
Position steering gear straight ahead.
Push flexible coupling upward on steering spindle.
Disconnect negative cable from battery (steering gear
assembly may possibly move towards alternator).
|
|
Important:
Before removing mounting of steering gear, mark its position
opposite the bulkhead. This will ensure using the same installation
position later. To do this, thinly coat top bracket flange of
both steering gear retaining clamps opposite the bulkhead.
Paint must not run or smear. Allow paint to dry.
If necessary, scratch with marking tool.
Remove selector rod (1) of gearshift guide.
Press plastic clips out of each ball socket with a screw
driver.
|
|
Unbolt steering gear from bulkhead (arrows). Remove both
retaining straps (1), swing pinion shaft downward and remove it through the
left wheel well (viewed in driving direction).
Important:
If during removal of steering gear it turns out that the nuts
of the left steering gear retaining clamp (viewed in driving direction) are
not accessible, the steering gear has to be removed as for OHC engines.
|
|
Install
First, loosely fasten steering gear to bulkhead with
both re taining clamps (1).
The steering gear must be in straight ahead driving position.
The steering wheel spokes are centred diagonally and pointing
downward.
Use new self locking nuts (arrows).
|
|
Install selector rod of gearshift guide.
Push flexible coupling downward on steering pinion and
tighten clamp bolt for steering spindle flange - 25 Nm/18 lbf. ft.
Turn steering wheel once all the way from one stop to the
other (alignment of coupling).
|
|
Tighten steering gear to bulkhead - 22 Nm/16 lbf. ft.
Important:
Observe installation mark (paint mark on respective
bracket flange and bulkhead).
The possibility still exists to retain the exact installation
postion for later installation of steering gear by using KM - 542.
KM - 542 can be used for completely equipped factory
vehicles as well as on body shells.
Place KM-542 on the left and right control arm attachment screw
(arrow) and attach with previously removed collar nut.
Both machined surfaces (1) at bottom of steering gear housing
must be seated exactly on the gauge.
|
|
Important:
To bolt on control arm, raise it (weight with vehicle) until it
is lying approx. horizontal - damper bushing in torsion-free state.
Tighten clamp bolt for steering pinion flange -
25 Nm/18 lbf. ft.
Tighten tie rod joint - 35 Nm/26 lbf. ft.
Check straight ahead driving position of steering (see
operation "Steering, Position Straight Ahead").
