Airbag System System Modification F7: Programming
If a new airbag control unit is
installed in the vehicle, it must then be programmed.
As long as the control unit is not
programmed, trouble code 51 is set. This trouble code does not indicate a
fault, but rather serves to keep the system telltale activated until the
control unit has been correctly programmed. During programming, the control
unit is informed whether an airbag system with one deployment circuit (driver's
airbag only) or with two deployment circuits (driver's and co - driver's
airbags) has been installed in the vehicle.
If trouble code 51 is set, only limited diagnosis is
possible with TECH 1:
- Trouble codes can be read out but not deleted
- Data list parameters cannot be displayed
- The snapshot mode cannot be activated
As long as trouble code 51 is
not deleted, i. e. the control unit is not programmed, the control unit
deployment function is blocked, i. e. the airbag system is not operational.
To program the control unit and
thus also delete trouble code 51, observe the following instructions exactly.

Ignition ON
Press key F7 in system main
menu. Follow instructions of TECH 1.

When inquiring about the airbag
system installed in the vehicle, make the appropriate selection with the
utmost care. Select using the
arrow keys. Confirm with ENTER key.
When an airbag system with a
single deployment circuit is installed (driver's airbag only), then select DRIVER ONLY.
If an airbag system with two
deployment circuits (driver's and co - driver's airbags) is installed in
the vehicle, then select CO / DRIVER.
If an incorrect selection is
made at this point, the control unit may not be able to be programmed.
After selection of the airbag
system, programming of the control unit begins, lasting approx.
35 seconds.

If the display on the right
appears after programming, programming was successful.
After completing programming,
switch the ignition off and on again once.
To be on the safe side, read out
trouble codes again. Trouble code 51 must not be stored.

If the display on the right
appears after programming, a fault has occurred during programming.
The following measures should
performed consecutively:
Reprogram;
perform TECH 1 self -
test;
check TECH 1 cable for
damaged insulation and shielding;
reprogram with a new airbag
control unit;

If the display on the right
appears after programming, a fault has occurred during programming.
If the YES key is pressed,
TECH 1 displays all trouble codes stored in the control unit. The
following lists the possible fault sources:
Trouble codes 51 and 34:
The system selected was DRIVER ONLY although the vehicle is
equipped with a system with two deployment circuits (driver and co -
driver airbag) - reprogram;
or
The selection (DRIVER ONLY, one deployment circuit
installed in vehicle) was correct. The control unit has however registered a
resistance lower than 150 W between Ter. 5 and 6 - eliminate fault as
specified in trouble code table (trouble code 34) and then reprogram;
Trouble codes 51 and 33:
The system selected was CO / DRIVER although the vehicle is
equipped with a system with only one deployment circuit (driver airbag
only) - reprogram;
or
The selection (CO / DRIVER, two deployment circuits
installed in vehicle) was correct. The control unit has however registered a
resistance higher than 5 W
between Ter. 5 and 6 - eliminate fault as specified in trouble code
table (trouble code 33) and then reprogram;
Trouble code 51 and other
trouble codes, except 33 and 34:
There is a fault in the system
which prevents programming. Eliminate fault according to trouble code table
or data list and then repeat programming.
