Steering Wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with
Airbag)
Caution
Before assembly operations which involve the airbag observe
without fail the safety regulations for pyrotechnical systems
– see "Safety Regulations – Steering".
The airbag unit must not be opened forcefully and must always be
laid down with the padded side upwards.
Remove
Disconnect ground cable from battery. Wait for 1 minute until
the condenser has discharged.
Remove airbag unit – see operation "Airbag Unit, Driver's
Side, Remove and Install" in group "C".
Turn steering to straight ahead position, remove ignition key
and allow steering lock to engage.
Caution
The steering and ignition lock must remain locked throughout the
whole operation.
Remove
Unclip wiring harness plug (3) for horn and for radio remote
control (if available) from bracket on steering wheel and
disconnect.
Bend locking plate (1) up and disconnect fastening nut (4) for
steering wheel from steering shaft and pull steering wheel with
KM-210-B (5) from steering shaft.
Caution
As of approx. March 1996, all vehicles are equipped ex-works
with steering wheels with additional guide pins (6). At the same
time, the airbag unit was accordingly provided with holes (7). On
replacing the steering wheel in vehicles up to approx. March 1996,
without replacing the airbag unit, the two guide pins (arrows) must
be removed.

Install
Guide wiring harness of contact unit and – if available
– the radio remote control through the opening in the
steering wheel hub. Place steering wheel on steering column –
make sure that carriers of contact unit engage in steering wheel
hub and that the marks which have previously been made on steering
wheel and steering shaft align with one another.
Attach steering wheel with fastening nut and retaining plate to
steering shaft – tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.
Release fastening nut by 90°, re-tighten to 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.
and secure from loosening with retaining plate.
Connect wiring harness plug for horn and, if available, for
radio remote control and clip to steering wheel bracket.
Install airbag unit – see operation "Airbag Unit, Driver's
Side, Remove and Install" in group "C".
Connect ground cable to battery.
