Table 1, Diagnostic Plug XD and Voltage Supply, Check

 

TECH 1 refers to Table 1 when TECH 1 is correctly connected but communication cannot be established with ignition ON. Carry out trouble-shooting according to the following table. At the end of checking, proceed with section 5.1.1.

Note:

In the following tests, a distinction has been made at times between vehicles with and without seat adjustment memories, as the control unit for seat adjustment with memory uses the same diagnostic lead as the engine control unit. If any of the following tests do not apply generally for all vehicles, this is mentioned specially.

 

·   Ignition ON

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       battery positive terminal Ter. 30

to:           ground

greater than 11 V

·   Battery discharged

·   Battery short circuit in cell

·   Battery contacts corroded

·   Poor battery ground connection

·   Short circuit to ground

from:       battery positive terminal Ter. 30

to:           ground

 

·   Perform TECH 1 self-test as specified in

     Operating Instructions

 

TECH 1 OK

 

·   See TECH 1 Operating Instructions

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 16

to:           ground

greater than 11 V

·   Short circuit to ground

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 16

to:           battery positive terminal Ter. 30

·   Circuit interruption

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 16

to:           battery positive terminal Ter. 30

·   Fuse F12 defective

 

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 16

to:           diagnostic plug XD Ter. 4 or Ter. 5

 

greater than 11 V

·   Circuit interruption

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 4 or Ter. 5

to:           ground

Vehicles without electric seat/ mirror adjustment:

 

 

·   Ignition OFF

·   Disconnect wiring harness plug from DDE control unit K70

·   Ignition ON

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           ground

 

lower than 0.1 V

·   Short circuit to voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

Vehicles without electric seat/ mirror adjustment:

 

 

·   Ignition OFF

·   Using multimeter, measure resistance

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           ground

 

greater than 100 kW (¥)

·   Short circuit to ground

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

Vehicles without electric seat/ mirror adjustment:

 

 

·   Using multimeter, measure resistance

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

 

lower than 2 W

·   Circuit interruption

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

Vehicles with electric seat/ mirror adjustment:

 

 

·   Ignition OFF

·   Disconnect wiring harness plug from DDE control unit K70

·   Connect TECH 1

·   In TECH 1, select electric seat/ mirror adjustment

·   Ignition ON

Communication possible

·   Short circuit in wiring harness

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for electric seat/ mirror adjustment K103 Ter. 6

·   Control unit for electric seat/ mirror adjustment defective (see Checking Procedures, Electronic Body Systems)

 

Vehicles with electric seat/ mirror adjustment:

 

 

·   Ignition OFF

·   Disconnect TECH 1

·   Using multimeter, measure resistance

from:       wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

to:           diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

 

lower than 2 W

·   Circuit interruption

from:       wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 42

to:           diagnostic plug XD Ter. 7

·   Ignition ON

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 6

to:           ground

lower than 0.1 V

·   Short circuit to voltage

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 6

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 27

 

·   Ignition OFF

·   Using multimeter, measure resistance

from:       diagnostic plug XD Ter. 6

to:           ground

·   Short circuit to ground

·   Using multimeter, measure resistance

·   Circuit interruption

·   Short circuit to ground

·   Circuit interruption

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 6

to:           ground

lower than 0.1 V

·   Short circuit to voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 6

to:           wiring harness plug for switch S1 Ter. 15 (vehicles without anti-theft warning system/ immobilizer)

to:           wiring harness plug for anti-theft warning system control unit K94 Ter. 3 (vehicles with anti-theft warning system)

to:           wiring harness plug for immobilizer control unit K117 Ter. 3 (vehicles with immobilizer)

·   Fault in circuit of anti-theft warning system/ immobilizer (see Checking Procedures, Electronic Body Systems)

 

·   Ignition ON

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 6

to:           ground

11.5 to 13.5 V

·   Short circuit to ground/ circuit interruption

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 6

to:           wiring harness plug for switch S1 Ter. 15 (vehicles without anti-theft warning system/ immobilizer)

to:           wiring harness plug for anti-theft warning system control unit K94 Ter. 3 (vehicles with anti-theft warning system)

to:           wiring harness plug for immobilizer control unit K117 Ter. 3 (vehicles with immobilizer)

·   Fault in circuit of anti-theft warning system/ immobilizer (see Checking Procedures, Electronic Body Systems)

 

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 6

to:           base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 4

 

11.5 to 13.5 V

·   Circuit interruption

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 4

to:           ground

·   Ignition OFF

·   Using multimeter, measure voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 2

to:           ground

 

Note:

If this test is performed with ignition ON, the voltage may be approx. 3 V.

 

lower than 0.1 V

·   Short circuit to voltage

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 16 or Ter. 17

to:           wiring harness plug for injection pump actuator P68 Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for exhaust gas recirculation solenoid valve Y18 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for injection adjuster solenoid valve Y20 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for preheater time relay K25 Ter. 12

 

 

 

Note:

If the nominal value is not attained, also carry out test steps 28/ 29 (preheater time relay), test step 21 (injection pump actuator), test step 33 (exhaust gas recirculation solenoid valve), test step 22 (injection adjuster solenoid valve)

 

·   DDE control unit K70 defective

 

·   Bridge reverse battery protection relay K17 with electrically fused jumper

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 8

to:           base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 2

·   TECH 1 parameter BATTERY VOLTAGE

Communication possible 11.5 to 13.5 V

·   Short circuit to ground

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 16 or Ter. 17

to:           wiring harness plug for injection pump actuator P68 Ter. 7

to:           wiring harness plug for exhaust gas recirculation solenoid valve Y18 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for injection adjuster solenoid valve Y20 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for preheater time relay K25 Ter. 12

 

 

 

·   Circuit interruption

from:       base of reverse battery protection relay K17 Ter. 2

to:           wiring harness plug for DDE control unit K70 Ter. 16 or Ter. 17

 

Note:

If the nominal value is not attained, also carry out test steps 28/ 29 (preheater time relay), test step 21 (injection pump actuator), test step 33 (exhaust gas recirculation (solenoid valve), test step 22 (injection adjuster solenoid valve)

 

·   DDE control unit K70 defective

 

 

If nominal values are attained

·   Reverse battery protection relay K17 defective
