"Transmission Fluid Condition, Check"

Note:   A check of the colour and smell of the automatic transmission fluid provides initial diagnostic data on the condition of the mechanical components of the automatic transmission.

  • Vehicle positioned horizontally.
  • Parking brake applied.
  • Brake pedal applied.
  • Engine runs warm at idle speed.
  • Shift selector lever once through all positions from P to 1 and back again to P.
  • Engine OFF.
  • Drain small quantities of transmission fluid and fill into glass.

Check colour and smell of drained transmission fluid:

  • For red, clear transmission fluid without particles, continue trouble-shooting according to Checking Procedure "AR 25/35 Automatic 4-Speed Transmission Omega-B."
  • With brown/black cloudy transmission fluid that smells of burning, it is recommended that the transmission is disassembled to check the lining plates of the respective clutches or brake and to replace them if necessary (AR 25/35 only).
  • If there is a high percentage of metal particles in the transmission fluid then it is recommended that the transmission be replaced with one that has been overhauled.

Torque

Fluid drain bolt to transmission with new seal ring – 33 Nm / 24 lbf. ft.

Check / inspect
