Steering Gear, Remove and Install (Vehicles with
V6 Engine and LHD)
Remove
Remove battery, detach wiring harness plug (1). Remove engine
control unit – see operation "Engine Control Unit, Remove and
Install" in group "J".
|
|
Vehicles with air conditioning: Drain air conditioning –
see operation "Air Conditioning, Drain" in group "D".
Remove power assisted steering reservoir – see operation
"Power Assisted Steering Reservoir, Remove and Install".
|
|
Remove brake servo – see operation "Brake Servo, Remove
and Install or Replace" in group "H". Unscrew clamping bolts (1 and
2), carefully expand clamps of disc joint.
Caution
Vehicles with airbag, turn steering wheel to "straight ahead"
position, engage steering lock and remove ignition key.
|
|
Remove
Push disc joint as far as possible on steering shaft.
Remove hydraulic unit heat shield. Remove hydraulic unit –
see operation "Hydraulic Unit, Remove and Install or Replace (ABS
2SH/TC)" or "Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Unit, Remove and
Install (ABS 5.3/TC)" in group "H".
For vehicles with air conditioning: Remove fastening bolt (1)
and disconnect refrigerant lines from bulkhead.
|
|
Release fastening bolt (1) for heat shield of steering gear.
Unscrew pressure line (3) and return line (2) from steering
gear.
Disconnect wiring harness plug (4) for electro-hydraulic
converter. Lift vehicle. Unscrew engine compartment cover.
|
|
Remove protective cap.
Remove fastening nut for steering arm from steering shaft. Mark
installation position of steering arm with respect to the steering
shaft. Detach steering arm using KM-146-01 (1).
Unfasten fastening nuts (2) from steering gear heat shield and
remove heat shield from below.
Unfasten fastening screws (3-6) for steering gear. Lower
vehicle.
Move refrigerant lines (if present) and brake lines slightly to
one side, remove steering gear upwards.
|
|
For Replacement of Steering Gear (Vehicles up to
MY '96):
Due to a change to the steering gear from MY '96, the following
operations are to be carried out prior to installation:
After removal of steering gear, the seal (1) at the bulkhead
must be removed – this operation must be carried out with
great care, as it may otherwise lead to the ingress of water and
passenger compartment noise in the area of the bulkhead.
Prior to installation of steering gear, the new bulkhead seal
(2) is to be aligned with the designation "OBEN" on the
identification plate and pushed onto the steering gear.
|
|
Install
Insert steering gear and push into disc joint as far as
possible. Connect fastening bolts (1-4) for steering gear in the
following sequence and tighten: 1-4-3 – tightening torque 55
Nm / 40.5 lbf. ft.
Insert fork-shaped spacer ring between wheel well and steering
gear. Connect fastening bolt (2) and tighten – tightening
torque 55 Nm / 40.5 lbf. ft. Connect wiring harness plug for
electro-hydraulic converter.
|
|
Replace O-rings for pressure and return lines.
Connect pressure (2) and return line (1) to steering gear
– tightening torque 28 Nm / 20.5 lbf. ft.
|
|
Position the cooling fluid line on the bulkhead and tighten
fastening screw (1).
Install hydraulic unit – see operation "Hydraulic Unit,
Remove and Install or Replace (ABS 2SH/TC)" or "Hydraulic Unit with
ABS Control Unit, Remove and Install (ABS 5.3/TC)" in group "H".
Install brake servo unit – see operation "Brake Servo Unit,
Remove and Install or Replace" in group "H".
|
|
Cut lower screw hole for hydraulic unit heat shield to size (1)
approx. 15 mm. Screw in fastening screw for hydraulic unit heat
shield and install heat shield.
Unlock steering and ignition lock. Raise vehicle.
|
|
Position steering arm (1) on steering shaft as marked –
tightening torque 160 Nm / 118 lbf. ft. Attach protective flap.
Connect idler to bracket – tightening torque 60 Nm / 44.5
lbf. ft.
Connect heat insulation to steering gear – tightening
torque 15 Nm / 11 lbf. ft.
Install engine compartment cover. Lower vehicle.
Attach upper fastening bolt for heat shield of steering gear
– tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.
Slide disc joint onto steering gear and attach clamping bolts
(2) and (3) to steering gear and steering shaft – tightening
torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.
|
|
Install power assisted steering reservoir – see operation
"Power Assisted Steering Reservoir, Remove and Install".
Connect wiring harness plug (1). Install engine control unit
– see operation "Engine Control Unit, Remove and Install" in
group "J".
Vehicles with air conditioning: Fill air conditioning –
see operation "Air Conditioning, Evacuate and Charge" in group
"D".
Bleed brake system and check for tightness – see operation
"Brake System, Bleed" and "Brake System, Check for Leaks" in
Assembly "H".
Install battery. Charge and bleed hydraulic system – see
operation "Hydraulic System, Charge and Bleed".
