Steering Column Assembly, Remove and Install
Remove
Disconnect battery.
Detach clips for footwell panelling and remove footwell
panelling.
Vehicles with ESP: Release wiring harness plug (2) and detach
from steering angle sensor (1).
Remove steering wheel – see operation "Steering Wheel
and/or Slip Ring, Replace (Vehicles without Airbag)".
Caution
In vehicles with Airbag: remove steering wheel – see
operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with
Airbag)". Before removing the steering wheel, move steering to
straight ahead position and lock. Remove contact unit – see
operation "Airbag Contact Unit, Remove and Install" in group
"C".

Remove
Unfasten fastening screws (1) and fastening screws (2) of the
signal switch housing and remove the two part signal switch
housing.

Remove lock cylinder – see operation "Lock Cylinder for
Steering and Ignition Lock, Remove and Install" in group "N".
Release and detach wiring harness plug from contact unit for
steering and ignition lock – see operation "Contact Unit for
Steering and Ignition Lock, Remove and Install" in group "N".
Unclip wiper switch (2) and signal switch (1).
Remove fuse box (3) and relay box (4).
Unclip footwell panelling.
Unscrew clamp bolt of steering shaft.

Remove steering column fastening screw from bulkhead. Carefully
chisel off shear bolt (1) and screw out – taking care not to
damage the shear slide. Unfasten fastening nut (2) and remove
steering column.

Install
Insert steering column. Carefully push steering shaft into
steering shaft flange.
When connecting the steering column make sure that the steering
column is not tensioned.
Connect clamp bolt (3) to steering shaft flange –
tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft. Connect fastening nut (2) to
steering column support bracket – tightening torque 22 Nm /
16 lbf. ft. Insert shear bolt (1) and tighten until the bolt head
shears off. Connect fastening bolt for steering column to bulkhead
– tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.

Screw on fuse box and relay box. Clip in signal and wiper
switch. Connect and lock wiring harness plug to contact unit for
steering and ignition lock. Install steering and ignition lock
– see operation "Lock Cylinder for Steering and Ignition
Lock, Remove and Install".
Install signal switch panelling.
Vehicles with ESP: Connect wiring harness plug to steering angle
sensor.
Attach footwell panelling.
In vehicles with Airbag: install contact unit – see
operation "Airbag Contact Unit, Remove and Install" in group
"C".

Install steering wheel – see operation "Steering Wheel
and/or Slip Ring, Replace (Vehicles without Airbag)" or "Steering
wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Airbag)".
Connect ground cable to battery.
Vehicles with ESP: Calibrate steering wheel sensor – see
operation "Steering Wheel Sensor, Remove and Install (Vehicles with
ESP)".
