ABS Control Unit, Remove and Install (Vehicles with ABS 5.3/TC)     Remove, Disconnect    Remove hydraulic modulator with ABS control unit - see operation "Hydraulic Modulator with ABS Control Unit, Remove and Install (Vehicles with ABS 5.3/TC)".   Clamp in hydraulic modulator with pump motor side facing downwards in vice - use soft metal jaw protectors.   Release wiring harness plug (1) for pump motor and detach from ABS control unit. Carefully push wiring harness out of clamp retainer.   Remove fastening bolts (arrows). Carefully remove ABS control unit from hydraulic modulator - ensure that the coil bracket is not damaged. Disconnect ABS control unit upwards on the coil side - note installation position of spring plate.     Important!    The re-use of fastening bolts is prohibited.

  Inspect   

Check gasket to ensure it is in good condition and clean. Run finger tip along the gasket to feel for cracks, rough surface, notches etc. Replace the ABS control unit if the sealing surfaces are damaged.     Clean    Thoroughly clean sealing surface on control unit with lint-free cloth - soak cloth with cleaning spirit if there are heavy deposits or gasket remnants.     Install, Connect    Carefully place ABS control unit onto hydraulic modulator and attach to hydraulic modulator with new bolts. Tighten fastening bolts (1) in the region of the coil body alternating crosswise. Then tighten fastening bolts (2).     Tighten (Torque)    ABS control unit to hydraulic modulator - 2.6 Nm / 2 lbf. ft.

  Install, Connect   

Install hydraulic modulator with ABS control unit - see operation "Hydraulic Modulator with ABS Control Unit, Remove and Install (Vehicles with ABS 5.3/TC)".  

  Inspect   

Bleed brake system bleed and check for leaks - see operation "Brake System, Bleed and Check for Leaks".  

ABS-5.3/TC can be diagnosed using TECH 2. The ABS control units are not flash-programmable. The relevant version codes for engine / transmission must be input using TECH 2 after an ABS control unit has been replaced.  

Check function of brakes and ABS during test drive.
