Cylinder Head, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL)
 Important! Only remove cylinder head with engine cold (room temperature).
 Remove, Disconnect Rear toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Rear, Remove and Install". Remove or detach all connections, hose and cable connections from inlet manifold. For X 16 XEL without secondary air system - see operation "Inlet Manifold, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL without Secondary Air System, Y 16 XE)" and "Inlet Manifold Flange, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL without Secondary Air System, Y 16 XE)". For X 16 XEL with secondary air system - see operation "Inlet Manifold - Upper Part, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL with Secondary Air System)" and "Inlet Manifold - Lower Part, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL with Secondary Air System)". Remove lower coolant hose from radiator. Collect escaping coolant.
Remove, Disconnect For X 16 XEL with secondary air system: Remove air duct hose (1) and vacuum hose (2) from secondary air combination valve. Disconnect wiring harness plug (3) from oxygen sensor. Remove upper coolant hose (4) from radiator and thermostat housing. Remove power steering pump from auxiliary aggregate(s) support (2 fastening bolts) and suspend at suitable point. Detach wiring harness plug (5) from coolant temperature sender and wiring harness plug (6) from coolant temperature sensor. |

Remove, Disconnect Detach coolant hose (1) from coolant compensation tank. Release coolant hose (2) in direction of arrow and disconnect from heater core. Remove front exhaust pipe. |

Remove, Disconnect Loosen cylinder head bolts in illustrated sequence by first 1/4, then 1/2 turn. Remove cylinder head from cylinder block.
 Clean Remove gasket remnants and clean sealing surfaces. Notice: If the cylinder head is to be checked or modified, all the outer attaching parts must be removed from the cylinder head.
 Inspect Check cylinder head and cylinder block for plane surface - see operations "Cylinder Head, Check for Plane Surface" and "Cylinder Block, Check for Plane Surface".
 Install, Connect Place new cylinder head gasket on cylinder block with identification "OBEN/TOP" upwards and towards timing side of the engine. |

 Adjust Before installing cylinder head, set crankshaft to approx. 60 ° before TDC mark.
Install, Connect Place cylinder head onto cylinder block and secure with new fastening bolts in sequence shown with MKM-610 and KM-470-B - tightening torque 25 Nm / 18 lbf. ft. + 90 ° + 90 ° + 90 ° + 45 ° 1) . Install front exhaust pipe. Attach coolant hose (from lower part of inlet manifold to the heater core) to heater core. Attach coolant hose to coolant compensation tank. Attach power steering pump to auxiliary aggregate(s) support - tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. Attach wiring harness plugs to coolant temperature sender and to coolant temperature sensor. Attach upper radiator hose to radiator and thermostat housing. Attach air duct hose and vacuum hose to secondary air combination valve. Connect wiring harness plug for oxygen sensor.. Attach vacuum hose and air duct hose to secondary air combination valve. Attach lower coolant hose to radiator. |

Install, Connect Attach or connect all connections, hose and cable connections to inlet manifold. For X 16 XEL with secondary air system - see operation "Inlet Manifold - Upper Part, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL with Secondary Air System)" and "Inlet Manifold - Lower Part, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL with Secondary Air System)". For X 16 XEL without secondary air system - see operation "Inlet Manifold, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL without Secondary Air System, Y 16 XE)" and "Inlet Manifold Flange, Remove and Install (X 16 XEL without Secondary Air System, Y 16 XE)". Install rear toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Rear, Remove and Install". Top up cooling system - see operations "Cooling System, Top up and Bleed" and "Cooling System, Check for Leaks".
