Bleeding the Fuel System (X 20 DTL, X 20 DTH, Y 20 DTH, Y 22 DTR)  

Notice: 

It is essential, because of the structural design of the Distributor Injection Pump VP 44, that the fuel system is bled with the aid of an external fuel pump with the designation KM-948. Bleeder Unit KM-948 must be used on the fuel system after all operations, e.g. replacing the fuel filter, empty fuel tank to restart the engine.  

Preconditions:   There should be at least 5 litres of fuel in the fuel tank.   All the fuel and oil leak lines must be in perfect condition when fitted.   It is essential that the battery is charged well.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Installation of Bleeder Unit KM-948:   Open hose clamp (1) and detach flexible fuel return line (3) from metal pipe (2) - collect escaping fuel.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Secure intake line (1) from KM-948 using reducer to flexible fuel line (4) with hose clamp - there is a fuel filter in the intake line.   Secure high-pressure line (2) from KM-948 to metal pipe (3) using hose clamp supplied.   Connect KM-948 to battery and run engine for approx. 3 min. without actuating starter (preliminary bleed).   After this period of time the starter can also be actuated until the engine starts (starting operation max. 40 seconds). The starting operation should be repeated after approx. 20 seconds if, during this period, the engine has not started (recuperation period for battery and starter).   Once the engine has started, allow the engine to idle briefly with bleeder unit connected.     Install, Connect    Disconnect bleeder unit, connect fuel return line and secure using new hose clamp.   Restart engine and check fuel system for leaks.
