Bleeding of Fuel System Using KM - 948

Vehicles:

Vectra - B with X 20 DTL (DI 16V)

Condition:

With the introduction of the diesel direct injection engine X 20 DTL, the procedure for bleeding the fuel system has changed. As a result of the design of the distributor injection pump VP 44, it is necessary to bleed the fuel system using an external fuel pump (with the designation KM - 948). The Bleeder Unit KM - 948 must be used for restarting the engine following all work on the fuel system (e. g. replacing fuel filter) or if the fuel tank has been emptied.

The requirements for bleeding and the installation procedure for KM - 948 are documented below.

Remedy:

Requirements:

-      There should be at least 5 litres of fuel in the fuel container

-      All installed fuel and oil leakage lines must be in perfect condition

-      The battery must be well charged

Note:

Please ensure that the oil leakage lines are connected to the fuel feed line (contrary to standard practice on Opel diesel engines). In the course of the annual inspection, operation 21, "Brake Lines, Brake Pressure Hoses and Fuel Lines, Inspect", inspect the oil leakage lines and replace them if necessary.

Installation of Bleeder Unit KM - 948:

Release hose clamp (1) and remove the flexible fuel return line (3) from the metal line (2) - collect any emerging fuel.

Fasten the intake line (1) of KM - 948 (the intake line contains a fuel filter) with an adapter to the flexible fuel line (4) using a hose clamp.

Attach the pressure line (2) of KM - 948 to the metal line (3) using the enclosed hose clamp.

Object Number: 2397186 Size: DEFAULT

Connect KM - 948 to the battery and allow to run for approx. 3 minutes without attempting to start the engine (pre - bleeding).

Once this period has elapsed, turn the engine over until it starts (starting procedure max. 40 seconds).

If the engine does not start during this period, the starting procedure must be repeated after a pause of approx. 20 seconds (recovery phase for the battery and the starter).

Once the engine has been successfully started, allow it to idle for a short period with the bleeder unit still connected.

Remove the bleeder unit, reconnect the fuel return line and fasten using a new hose clamp.

Re - start the engine and inspect the fuel system for leaks.
