Steering Intermediate Shaft, Remove and Install  

  Important!   

For vehicles with airbag: turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position and allow steering lock to engage.   Notice:  A modified steering intermediate shaft (5) is featured in all vehicles as of 10/98.   The respective engaging position of the steering lock before disassembling the steering wheel serves to distinguish the modified steering intermediate shaft.   LHD - vehicles (1):   1 (up to 10/98) lock settings of steering wheel lock with approx. 10 ° left turn.   2 (up to 10/98) lock settings of steering wheel lock with approx. 45 ° right turn.     RHD - vehicles (II):   3 (up to 10/98) lock settings of steering wheel lock with approx. 40 ° right turn.   4 (from 10/98 onwards) lock settings of steering wheel lock with approx. 5 ° left turn.

III Differentiating characteristic after disassembly of steering wheel is the installation position of intermediate steering shaft.

Vehicles (up to 10/98) outer sleeve (5) of adjusting piece - intermediate steering shaft in direction of steering shaft.

Vehicles (from 10/98) outer sleeve of adjusting piece - intermediate steering shaft in direction of steering transmission.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove footwell panelling and unscrew ventilation duct. Unscrew clamp bolts (1) and (2), and slightly press together and remove steering intermediate shaft - note compensating plate.     Install, Connect    Coat new clamp bolt (1) with screw locking compound (red) and attach steering intermediate shaft to steering shaft - tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft. + 45 ° + 15 ° . Coat new clamp bolt (2) with screw locking compound (red) and attach steering intermediate shaft to steering shaft - tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft. + 45 ° + 15 ° . Install ventilation duct and footwell panelling.     Inspect    Check straight-ahead position, and adjust if necessary - see operation "Straight-ahead Position, Check and Adjust".
