Glow Plug: Testing and Inspection

Glow Plugs -Q6-, Checking

Special tools

Fluke 83 multimeter

-

VW 1594 Adaptor kit

-

VAG 1527B Voltage tester

-

3220 swivel socket with extension 

Checking conditions

-

Battery voltage 11.5 Volts minimum

-

Ignition switched OFF

-

Diesel direct injection system Engine Control Module J248 OK

-

S163 Glow plug strip fuse OK

-

Production number on reverse side of glow plug relay must be: "180"

Checking sequence

-

Disconnect harness connector from Engine Coolant Temperature -G62- sensor -arrow-.

NOTE:  Disconnecting -G62- simulates "engine cold" condition. Switching ON ignition initiates normal glow period.

Disconnect glow plug harness connectors from Glow Plugs -Q6-.

-

Switch ON ignition.

-

Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt range.
