Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
ECM Identification, Connecting VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

VAG 1551 Scan Tool
NOTE: The VAG 1552 can be used instead of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool; however a print-out is not possible.

VAG 1551/3A Cable
Requirements:
-
Fuses 10, 28, 29, 32, 34 and 43 must be OK.

ALL electrical consumers switched OFF.
-
A/C switched OFF (if installed)
-
Automatic Transmission Range selector in "P" or "N" position
-
Battery Voltage must be 11.5 Volts minimum
-
Ground connection between engine (on transmission bell housing) and body (below battery) OK.
Work sequence:

Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable
After Scan Tool is connected:
-
Depending upon desired function:
Switch ON ignition or Start engine
NOTES:

If display remains blank, check Voltage supply for diagnostic connection

If due to an input malfunction "malfunction in data transfer!" is displayed, pull wire OFF Scan Tool, reconnect and repeat work step.

Operate Scan Tool taking into account the information on the display:
