‹› Hot Air Gun from Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978 B)

  ‹› If the Engine Control Module (ECM) will be replaced, connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform the "Replacing Engine Control Module"

Removing

-

Turn off the ignition.

-

Remove the windshield wiper arms, plenum chamber cover and bulkhead plenum chamber.

  ‹› The thread of the shear bolts are equipped with locking compound. By heating the shear bolts using a hot air gun,the inhibition effect of the

locking compound is lowered.

Cover the wires, connectors and control modules near the ECM to prevent them from being burned.

Perform the adjustments on the hot air gun - 4 - as shown:

Turn the potentiometer for the temperature adjustment - 2 - to the maximum heat output (600 °C (1112 °F)).

Move the two stage switch for air quantity - 3 - to position 3.

By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries.

Guide the nozzle of the hot air gun onto the shear bolts.

Turn the heat gun on and heat the bolts.

Remove the bolts using locking pliers.

  ‹› If the bolts cannot be removed, cut into the heads so two parallel surfaces are formed - arrows - and then remove them.
