  Caution
The crankshaft must not be removed. Just loosening the main bearing caps will cause deformation of the cylinder block bearing pedestals. This deformation will cause a reduction of the bearing clearance. Even if the bearing shells are not renewed bearing damage could occur due to a different bearing clearance.
If the bearing cap bolts are loosened, the cylinder block must be renewed complete with the crankshaft.
Measuring the main bearing clearance is not possible with normal workshop equipment.
   
1 - 10 Nm
2 - Suction line
3 - 10 Nm
4 - Aluminium cylinder block
5 - Knock sensor 1 -G61-
6 - 20 Nm
q   The specified torque influences the function of the knock sensor.
7 - 60 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
q   Renew.
8 - Washer
q   Note installation position.
9 - Pressure plate/drive plate
q   Removing and installing pressure plate → Chapter
q   Removing and installing drive plate → Chapter.
10 - Intermediate plate
q   Must seat on dowel sleeves.
q   Do not damage or bend when assembling.
11 - Sender wheel
q   For engine speed sender -G28-.
q   Always renew together with sealing flange cover.
q   Removing and installing sender wheel → Chapter.
12 - Sealing flange with oil seal
q   Renew complete with oil seal and sender wheel only.
q   Removing and installing sealing flange → Chapter.
13 - Gasket
q   Renew.
14 - Oil pump
q   Renew complete only.
q   When installing, note drive on crankshaft → Item.
q   Must seat on dowel sleeves.
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
15 - 12 Nm
q   Renew.
16 - Seal
q   Renew. → Chapter.
17 - Follower
q   Coat with oil before installing oil pump.
18 - Gasket
q   Renew.
