Refer to procedure „Removing gearbox“ for required special tools → Chapter.

All threaded holes into which self-locking bolts are to be screwed must be cleaned of residual locking fluid with a thread chaser.
–
Always renew self-locking bolts and nuts.
–
Check whether dowel sleeves for aligning engine and gearbox are fitted in cylinder block and install if necessary.
If dowel sleeves are not fitted, difficulties shifting gears, clutch problems and possible noises from the gearbox (rattling of gears which are not engaged) could occur.
–
Ensure that intermediate plate is correctly seated on engine.
–
Clean input shaft splines and apply thin coat of grease for clutch plate splines -G 000 100-.
The clutch plate must slide easily to and fro on the input shaft.
–
Unbolt left securing bolt for heat shield -1- from subframe.
–
Secure retainer -T10346- with bolt -2-.
-2- = Flange bolt M6 x 20.
–
Secure engine support -3300 A- to bracket -T10346-.
Place a cloth between engine support -3300 A- and oil pan.
–
Press engine forwards using spindle of engine support -3300 A-. In the process, observe the following points in particular:
l
The air conditioning compressor -2- must not contact -arrow- the refrigerant line -1-.
l
The alternator must not contact the refrigerant line.
l
The pressure pipe must not contact the radiator.
To install gearbox „0AH“, set up gearbox support -3282- with adjustment plate -3282/46-.
–
Insert gearbox support -3282- in engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–
Fit adjustment plate -3282/46- on gearbox support -3282- (adjustment plate fits in only one position).
–
Align arms of gearbox support according to holes in adjustment plate.
–
Attach support elements to adjustment plate as illustrated.
–
Place gearbox on engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–
Align adjustment plate and gearbox parallel to one another.
–
Screw pin -3282/29- into hole on gearbox for securing bolt of pendulum support.
–
Secure adapter -3282/45- to gearbox using M8 nut -arrow-.
–
Now turn gearbox downwards in vicinity of 5th gear cover using spindles of gearbox support -3282-.
–
Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under vehicle. Arrow on adjustment plate points in direction of vehicle travel.
–
Carefully lift gearbox.
l
5th gear cover of gearbox faces front end.
Note
Be careful of all lines when installing gearbox.
–
Carefully guide gearbox with right-hand flange shaft -A- past subframe and flywheel as shown.
–
Then move gearbox into installation position.
On some engines, the engine/gearbox connecting bolt is located over the right flange shaft (bolt -A-).
–
Screw in lower engine/gearbox connecting bolts and tighten them to specified torque → Chapter.
–
After gearbox has been bolted to engine, remove engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- from gearbox.
–
For vehicles with a sheet metal sump, fit cover plate near sump -arrows- → Chapter.
–
Install slave cylinder -1- and tighten bolts to specified torque → Item.
–
Press pipe/hose line -A- into retainer -B- on gearbox.
–
Bolt left assembly mounting -arrows- to gearbox using new hexagon bolts and tighten to specified torque → Chapter.
–
Align engine and gearbox in installation position.
–
Screw in new bolts -arrows- for the left assembly mounting and tighten to specified torque → Chapter.
WARNING
Do not remove support bracket -10 - 222 A- until the bolts securing the left and right assembly mountings have been tightened to specified torque.

Install earth strap on centre hex stud of left assembly mounting.
–
Screw in upper engine/gearbox securing bolts and tighten to specified torque → Chapter.
