Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Locking pin -2064-
t  Adjustment bar -2065 A-
t  Counterhold tool -3036-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

Test procedure
–  Remove upper toothed belt guard and cylinder head cover.
–  Check toothed belt tension.
   
–  Set engine to TDC for cylinder No. 1 -arrow-. Adjustment bar -2065 A- must fit into recess in camshaft. If adjustment bar -2065 A- cannot be inserted, adjust timing as follows.
–  Rotate crankshaft so that adjustment bar -2065 A- can be inserted.
–  Align adjustment bar -2065 A- as follows: Turn locked camshaft until one end of the adjustment bar -2065 A- contacts cylinder head. Use feeler gauge to measure clearance which has arisen at other end of adjustment bar -2065 A-. Insert a feeler gauge with half of the clearance dimension between adjustment bar -2065 A- and cylinder head. Now turn camshaft until adjustment bar -2065 A- contacts the feeler gauge. Insert a 2nd feeler gauge of same dimension at the other end between adjustment bar -2065 A- and cylinder head.
  V23-0169
–  Loosen securing bolt of camshaft sprocket half a turn. To loosen securing bolt of camshaft sprocket, secure with counterhold -3036-.
  Note
To loosen and tighten camshaft sprocket, never use adjustment bar -2065 A- as a counterhold! Use counterhold -3036-.

–  Release camshaft pulley from taper on camshaft by striking on punch (positioned through hole in toothed belt guard) with in a blow from a hammer.

–  Lock injection pump sprocket with locking pin -2064-.
–  Check TDC position of crankshaft. Flywheel TDC marking must align with cast lug on clutch housing.
–  Remove locking pin -2064- from injection pump sprocket.
–  Tighten camshaft sprocket securing bolt.
Specified torque: 45 Nm
–  Remove adjustment bar -2065 A- from camshaft.
–  Install toothed belt guard and cylinder head cover.
–  Dynamically check commencement of injection and adjust if necessary → Chapter.
