Removing

Assembly sequence for vehicles▸09.99

• ‒ Remove airbag unit=>Page 48-3 .
• ‒ Remove steering wheel=>Page 48-5 .
• ‒ → Press stowage compartment clips together in direction of arrows.
• ‒ Fold stowage compartment down and pull out towards rear.

• ‒ → Removing footwell cover.

• ‒ → Unclip cable channel -1- from column tube.

• ‒ → Unclip immobilizer control unit -1-.
• ‒ Separate cable connector on steering column switch.

• ‒ Remove airbag unit=>Page 48-9 .
• ‒ Remove steering wheel=>Page 48-12 .

Vehicles with electronic stability programme -ESP-

• ‒ Remove coil connector with slip ring and steering angle sender=>48-15 .
• ‒ → Remove cover -2- and -3-.

• ‒ → Remove knee padding -arrows-.

The continuation of the work sequence is now valid for all vehicles

• ‒ → Unclip cable channel -1- from column tube.

• ‒ → Remove plastic cover -arrow- over the ignition/starter switch connector.
• ‒ Pull connector off ignition/starter switch.

• ‒ → Removing cover -1-.

• ‒ → Remove joint bolt.

• ‒ → Drill out shear bolts -1- or chisel off with a suitable chisel.
• ‒ Pull joint off steering pinion and at the same time pull column tube out rearwards.
• ‒ Remove drilled out bolts from support if necessary (for ease of illustration 2nd bolt is not shown).

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence, when doing this note the following:

• ‒ Replace captive nut on joint with a self-locking nut.

Vehicles with electronic stability programme -ESP-

• ‒ Install coil connector with slip ring and steering angle sender=>48-15 .
• ‒ Then a zero comparison must be performed.
