Removing and installing airbag control unit
Removing and installing airbag control unit
Removing
  WARNING
Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
–  Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove centre console → Chapter.
   
–  Unscrew bolt -1- in driver's footwell.
–  Discharge static. Briefly touch car body or lock quoin of door.
–  Open catch on plug -arrow- and detach electrical connector -5-.
–  Unscrew bolts -3- and -4- in front passenger's footwell.
–  Lift airbag control unit -2- clear of studs and remove towards front passenger side.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is „electrically discharged“. To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate.
Install in reverse order, but note the following:

Ensure electrical connector is pushed fully onto stop and engages audibly.
  WARNING
Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery.
–  Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, the event memory must be read, cleared and then read again → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  If a new airbag control unit is installed -J234- the control unit must be encoded → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  The airbag control unit -J234- is earthed via the housing with the bodywork.
Installation tips: for example tightening torques, renewing components → Chapter.
