Removing and installing airbag unit with igniter
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Cotter drift, blade diameter 2 mm; maximum length 120 mm, with tapered blade tip, commercially available
Removing
  WARNING
t  Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Follow disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
–  Push steering wheel as far upwards as possible. Use the full adjustment range of the steering column adjustment for this purpose.
–  Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
   
–  Turn steering wheel until gap on rear of steering wheel faces directly upwards, „3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position“.
  Note
Wrap the head of the cotter drift with, for example, masking tape to prevent damage in the form of scratches to the dash panel insert.
–  Release catch -1- for driver side airbag -arrows-, using commercially available cotter drift, blade diameter 2 mm; maximum length 120 mm, with tapered blade tip.
–  Turn steering wheel through 180° and repeat procedure on opposite side of steering wheel.

   
–  Return steering wheel to mid-position (wheels pointing straight ahead).
  WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector), the person handling them must „electrostatically discharge“ himself. To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate.
–  Carefully pull driver side airbag slightly out of steering wheel.
–  Pull out connector mechanism and press down, unplug electrical connector -1-.
–  Remove airbag -2-.
  WARNING
Place airbag to one side such that VW emblem points upwards.

Installing
  WARNING
t  Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is „electrically discharged“. To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate.
Install in reverse order, but note the following:
  Note
t  Ensure electrical connector is pushed fully onto stop and engages audibly.
t  Ensure that no cables are trapped.
–  Connect the electrical connector for coil connectors to the push-on coupling for the airbag at the return ring with slip ring.
–  Locate driver side airbag in steering wheel and press until audibly engaged.
  WARNING
Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery.
–  Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Finally, read and clear event memory since faults may be stored as a result of detaching electrical connectors → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
Installation tips: for example tightening torques, renewing components → Chapter.
