Safety precautions when working on fuel supply system
  WARNING
Fuel supply line is pressurised.
t  Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and skin contact.
t  Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection.
t  Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
For reasons of safety, the power supply to the fuel pump must be interrupted before the fuel system is opened. The fuel pump would otherwise be activated when the driver's door is opened. Use one of the following options to interrupt the power supply:
Disconnect battery.
Or
Remove fuse for fuel delivery unit.
Or
Pull connector off fuel delivery unit flange.
  Caution
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:
t  Route lines of any kind so that the original routing can be restored.
t  Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all components.
  WARNING
There is a danger of spraying when working with pressure tester -VAS 6550-! Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and skin contact. Hold container before the free connection of pressure tester -VAS 6550-.
  WARNING
Connect earth wire to vehicle earth when working with fuel extractor -VAS 5190-.
When removing and installing fuel gauge sender or fuel pump (fuel delivery unit) from a full or partly full fuel tank, observe the following:
t  Before starting work, the extraction hose of a switched-on exhaust gas extraction system must be laid near to the assembly opening of the fuel tank.
t  The extraction hose is used to extract any escaping fumes.
t  If no exhaust gas extraction system is available, a radial fan with a displacement greater than 15 m3/h can be used providing that motor is not in air flow.
t  Prevent skin contact with fuel! Wear fuel-resistant gloves!
t  Remove fuse for fuel pump. Fuse assignment → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the injection and ignition system, the following must be observed:
t  Do not touch or pull off ignition coils with output stage when engine is running or turning at starter speed.
t  Switch off ignition before connecting or disconnecting injection and ignition system wiring as well as test instrument cables.
