New gear selector mechanism on 940/960
All 940/960 automatics from 1993 on will feature a newly designed gear selector mechanism.
Since the new mechanism is not equipped with a reaction arm, the gearbox reaction strut has been eliminated.
The method of adjusting the new mechanism to the gearbox has been modified.

Place car on lift and raise
Slacken control rod/gear lever arm nut sufficiently to permit rod to move in its groove

Move gear selector lever to position P.
Gently press lever forward until no play is present and hold in position with support
Note:
Handbrake must be released.

Press selector link on gearbox backward into position P.
Check that position P has actually been engaged by attempting to turn propeller shaft.

Tighten control rod/gear lever arm nut.
Torque 25 N-m (18 ft.lb). Remove support from gear selector lever.

Check adjustment
Move selector lever to position D. Check that play is present in direction of position N.

Move lever to position 2 and check that play is present indirection of position 1. Alternatively, move lever to position 3 and check that play is present in
direction of position 2 or L as appropriate
