GENERAL
INFORMATION:

Proper replacement of the cylinder head gasket is necessary to insure a quality repair

SERVICE
INFORMATION:

When a repair involves replacement of the cylinder head gasket, the following operations should be performed:

Clean head gasket mating surface of block. Using a straight edge, check the block for distortion. Any gap between the
straight edge and the block must not exceed 0.002 inch (0.05 mm). If gap exceeds this, reface mating surface of block. Do
not remove more material than necessary.

Clean gasket mating surface of head. Using a straight edge, check the head for distortion. Any gap between the straight edge
and the head must not exceed 0.004 inch (0.10 mm). If gap exceeds this, reface the cylinder head gasket surface. Do not
remove more material than necessary. Check depth of combustion using gauge A.96223. Gap between gauge and gasket
surface should not exceed 0.010 inch (0.25 mm). If gap exceeds this, replace head.

When installing the head gasket make sure the side with the word "GORE" (meaning "TOP") is facing upwards, toward the
cylinder head. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! If the head gasket is installed incorrectly, the oil passage to the camshaft
housing will be blocked. This can result in engine damage.
