INSPECTION
Inspect the exhaust pipe flange nuts to see if they are the old style or the new style.
^
If the exhaust pipe has new-style flange nuts, remove them normally.
^
If the exhaust pipe has old-style flange nuts, continue to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
2.
Turn off the engine, and raise the vehicle on a lift.
3.
Spray the exhaust pipe flange nuts and studs with Pro Honda Multi Purpose Lube and Rust Penetrant, and let the penetrant soak for 5 minutes.
4.
Use a 1/2-inch drive, 14 mm, 6-point deep socket; a 24-inch extension; and 24-inch long breaker bar to loosen the exhaust nuts. If a nut is difficult
to turn after you break it loose, turn it the opposite way about half a turn, and spray more penetrant before continuing.
NOTE:
If you have difficulty breaking the nuts loose, use a longer breaker bar or use a pipe to extend the length of the breaker bar.
5.
If both the nut and the stud come out, replace the stud, and install the new-style nut. If the stud breaks, remove the exhaust manifold, and inspect
the broken stud.
^
If the stud is protruding from the manifold, clamp the stud in a vise, and remove it by spinning the manifold. Replace any broken studs with
new ones, and install the new-style nuts.
^
If the stud is flush with the manifold, replace the manifold, and install the new-style nuts; the new manifold comes with studs installed.
