Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
Cleaning & Inspection
1. Wash bearings in solvent, then inspect bearings for wear, separation, cracks, seizure or other abnormal conditions. Replace bearings as necessary.
2. Check ring gear and drive pinion teeth for wear, chipping, cracks, pitting and abnormal contact. Ring gears and pinions are available only in
matched sets. If either component requires replacement, both parts must be replaced.
3. On models less limited slip differential, check drive pinion splines for cracks, distortion or step wear. Check pinion gears and side gears for
wear, chipped teeth and separation. Replace parts as necessary.
4. Check thrust washers for wear.
5. Check lockpin for bending, dents or other abnormal conditions. Replace parts as necessary.
6. Check side gear to axle shaft fit. Also check fit of pinion shaft to pinion gears.
7. Inspect contact surfaces between side gears and differential case, and between ring gear and case.
8. On models with limited slip differential, visually inspect all metal and friction parts for excessive wear, chipping or cracks. Polish any scratches
smooth using an oilstone.
9. Check friction discs and plates for deformation, Fig. 10. Replace any plate or disc that exceed 0.003 inch variation.

10. Check friction discs for wear, replace any that measurements exceed 0.004 inch difference between unworn lug areas and friction areas, Fig. 11.
11. Check thrust washers, replace any worn below 0.05 inch thickness.
12. Inspect differential case for signs of cracking.
