E02 Clutch slips

During acceleration, a consistent increase in the engine speed is noticed without a corresponding increase in the speed of the vehicle

This symptom can be easily checked by pressing the clutch pedal and engaging 4th speed; when accelerating and gradually releasing the clutch pedal, the vehicle does not move and the engine does not cut out

StepTest procedureResultAction
1CLUTCH PEDAL CHECK

Check the clutch pedal travel

OK

Move onto step 2

Pedal travel not correct

End of diagnosis

2FLUID LEAKS CHECK

Visually check for fluid leaks from the clutch pump and pipes

OK

Move onto step 3

Fault in the clutch operating circuit
  • Replace the components involved (see Assembly 1820B)

End of diagnosis

2FLUID LEAKS CHECK

Visually check for fluid leaks from the clutch pump and pipes and the gearbox bell housing (clutch actuator area)

OK

Move onto step 3

Fault in the clutch operating circuit
  • Replace the components involved (see Assembly 1820B)

End of diagnosis

3CLUTCH OPERATION CHECK

Check:

  • that the clutch operating cylinder push rod returns correctly to the rest position;
  • the outer surface of the cylinder: make sure that there are no traces of oil, resulting from a leak from the piston inner seal
OK

Move onto step 4

Clutch operating cylinder faulty

End of diagnosis

Clutch pump faulty

End of diagnosis

3CLUTCH OPERATION CHECK

Check the condition of the clutch actuator, inside the gearbox bell housing.

OK

Move onto step 4

Clutch actuator fault or oil leak
  • Replace the components involved (see Assembly 1820B)

End of diagnosis

4CLUTCH PLATE CHECK

Check:

  • clutch plate wear - clutch plate fouling (oil or grease)
  • that the clutch plate is not distorted
  • that there is no damage to the pressure plate diaphragm spring
OK

Move onto step 5

Clutch plate or pressure plate faulty

End of diagnosis

Presence of oil or grease

End of diagnosis

5CHECK SPLINED HUB

Check for excess grease on the clutch plate hub bushes and the gearbox main shaft

OK

Move onto step 6

Gearbox main shaft hub faulty
  • Replace the gearbox main shaft (see OVERHAULING GEARBOXES Assembly 2110B)

End of diagnosis

Clutch plate hub bushes faulty
  • Restore the correct lubrication for the bushes
  • If necessary, replace the clutch plate Op. 1810A20

End of diagnosis

6FLYWHEEL CHECK

Check the condition of the flywheel (in particular, the condition of the surface and that there are no signs of overheating, irregular wear, incisions or the removal of material)

OK

Move onto step 7

Flywheel damaged

End of diagnosis

7CHECK CORRECT OPERATION

Check that the fault is no longer present

OK

End of diagnosis

Fault persists
