Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

Hydraulic Lifter

Checking

    Hydraulic valve lifters are non-adjustable. Noisy lifters may be replaced after the following check.

1.

Run engine until radiator fan comes on at least once.

2.

Raise engine speed to 2500 RPM, for two minutes.

3.

If lifter(s) is still noisy, proceed as follows:
a. Remove cylinder head cover.
b. Turn crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise until cam lobes of cylinder to be checked, point upward.
c. Press down lightly against valve lifter with a wooden stick. If lifter can be pushed down more than .004 inch (.1mm), replace, refer to 

HYDRAULIC LIFTER. 

Replacement

    After replacing hydraulic lifters, do not run engine for 30 minutes. This will allow lifters time to bleed down to proper adjustment.

Remove camshaft, refer to CAMSHAFT. 

2.

Replace defective lifter(s).

3.

Install camshaft, refer to CAMSHAFT.
